Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights Hold On For 2-1 Win Over Harvard

Potsdam, NY – The post was the best friend for the visitors on Friday afternoon as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team hit it three times, including once with an empty net, but the Golden Knights had enough offense around the near-misses to claim a 2-1 ECAC Hockey win over Harvard University at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-3 on the season and 3-0 in ECAC Hockey games, while Harvard fell to 2-3 on the year. Clarkson looks to stay unbeaten in league play when the team takes on Dartmouth on Saturday.

On three different occasions, the Knights looked to increase their lead to two goals, but once in the first period and two times in the third the post proved a powerful foe and kept Clarkson working to hold on for the win.

After a delay of game penalty only six minutes into the game, the Golden Knights were able to get on the board late in their power play chance. Morgan Walton sent the puck down near the end line where Rhea Hicks worked with the puck and tried to create some space. When Hicks sent the puck out in front, it was briefly collected by Scout Oudemool who then tried to clear it to the left boards. However, her intended clear found the stick of Megan McKay, and the first-year collegian quickly took advantage with a rapid shot through traffic to make it 1-0 at 8:23, with just under 20 seconds left on the power play.

Clarkson almost made it 2-0 with roughly 90 seconds left in the first period, but Raedyn Spademan's shot bounced off the pipe. It mattered little in the long run since Clarkson found the back of the net early in the second period for the two-goal advantage. Harvard was doing its best to keep the puck in its offensive zone when Walton flipped the puck forward in an attempted clear alongside the left boards. Lara Beecher was able to tip the puck away from a flat-footed Harvard defender, creating a 2-on-1 in the other direction with Sena Catterall. Beecher held the puck as well as a Crimson defender and the attention of Harvard goalie Ainsley Tuffy on the right side of the ice before finally sending the pass through the slot to Catterall. The senior had all the time in the world to settle the puck and easily deposited it into a fairly wide open net at 3:19.

Clarkson owned a 17-3 edge in shots on goal in the first period, though that significant advantage fell to only 14-7 in the second. The Knights continued to have a dominant run in terms of shots in the third (12-4), but it was Harvard that got on the scoreboard to draw the visitors to within one. Off an offensive zone draw, the Crimson took the puck behind the net, but it turned into a bit of a broken play when the Harvard offensive player slipped behind the net and tipped the puck off the back of the net. However, Ella Lucia quickly recovered and sent the puck just in front of the crease to Antonina Dinges, who flipped the puck around Holly Gruber with just under four minutes off the clock in the third.

The Knights nearly regained their two-goal advantage about five minutes later but Jenna Smellie's shot rattled off the pipe once again. Clarkson continued to outlast Harvard when the Crimson pulled their goalie with around 2:30 remaining in the contest. Harvard had one shot blocked and then a tough angled shot was saved as the Crimson tried to work their 6-on-5 like a power play. A slip by a Harvard player almost allowed for an empty net goal, but Clarkson was similarly snake bit in transition when the puck hopped off the stick of Catterall and she was unable to get a clean shot off towards the vacated net. Forty seconds later, Rhea Hicks' backhand from the neutral zone hit the post yet again, and Manon le Scodon couldn't recover the rebound for the insurance goal, making the Knights settle for a 2-1 win.

Clarkson won the battle on shots 43-14 and was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Harvard went 1-for-2. Gruber finished with 13 stops and Tuffy had 41 saves for Harvard.
