Dartmouth Scores Three in Third to Down Knights, 3-0

Canton, NY – Three goals in the third period put the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team on its collective heels while trying to get the offense rolling, but the Golden Knights were unable to solve goalkeeper Jiahui Zhan of Dartmouth, falling 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights suffered their first league defeat of the year, dropping to 3-1 in ECAC Hockey contests and to 6-4 overall, while Dartmouth improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in league games. Clarkson is on the road next weekend, taking on Princeton and Quinnipiac.

The post was hit a number of times in the opening period, first by Dartmouth's Miami Jones and then latter by a few different skaters for the Golden Knights, but none received a fortuitous bounce. Clarkson held a significant advantage in shots at 16-5 in the first period while also winning the faceoff battle 12-4. The Big Green's defense was also up to the challenge, blocking 10 shots in the first 20 minutes.

The game evened out in the second period, though yet another denial was made by the post against Dartmouth's Ella Inglis about eight minutes into the stanza. Clarkson also had solid opportunities, especially while on the power play, though the best shot during the player advantage went wide and the others rarely made it through the Dartmouth defense without being partially blocked.

At the start of the third, Dartmouth scored on a seemingly innocuous turnover in the neutral zone. Clarkson's attempt at a stretch pass, found a stick in the middle for the Big Green and was carried into the Knights' defensive zone. After some clicking of sticks kept the puck out of any skater's control, it eventually leaked into the slot for Miami Jones who quickly took a shot. While the shot was on its way, Cally Dixon slipped somewhat to create a screen, and that helped Hamilton Doster finish off the play with the rebound at the bottom of the right circle just 30 seconds in.

Roughly six minutes later, the Big Green picked up a key goal to put pressure on the Knights' offense even more. Mia Buonarosa slid a back hand pass from the right boards into the slot for Ella Inglis, who immediately took a shot against Arianne Leblanc. A stop was made with Leblanc's glove, but it kicked out to Shae Messner charging in, and the awkward ricochet bounded over Leblanc and into the back of the net.

Dartmouth scored an insurance goal in the final six minutes out of transition. Cally Dixon gained possession in the Big Green's defensive zone and kicked it to the neutral zone for Sydney Vandenberg, who used a back hand around a Clarkson defender to put the puck near center ice. Sophia Chard then skated in and used a nifty back hand of her own, sliding the puck through the crease and off the far post at 14:01.

Shortly after, Clarkson was whistled for a penalty, putting the Knights on the defensive when the team needed to be pushing hard offensively against the deficit. Dartmouth followed with a penalty as well, allowing Clarkson to skate 6-on-4 after emptying the net. However, Dartmouth packed its defenders near the crease and kept the Knights off the scoreboard.

Clarkson finished with a 33-25 lead in shots on goal (82-53 in total shots) and also won 28 of 45 faceoff attempts. Leblanc made 22 saves for Clarkson and Jiahui Zhan made 33 stops for Dartmouth.
