Francis Top Finisher in the Freestyle Sprint on Day Two of USCSA Nationals

Lake Placid, NY – Five skiers advanced from the qualifying round to the quarterfinals on Wednesday as the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team participated in the Freestyle Sprint at the USCSA National Championships at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

The Golden Knights' men placed in the middle of the pack, taking sixth out of 11 squads, while the women took 11th out of 14 teams. Thursday is a day off for events with just training scheduled for the teams, but they return for the 15K Freestyle on Friday.

For the women, Skylar Francis was the lone skier of Clarkson's three entrants to make it to the quarterfinal round. Janneke Baks placed 54th overall with a qualifying time of 5:38.3 and Clare Janas was 56th in 6:15.9. Francis, however, placed 13th out of 58 skiers in the qualifying round and ended up 14th overall as she finished with a time of 3:52.61 in the quarterfinals.

For the men, four advanced past qualifying while a fifth nearly made the next round. Nathaniel Burke ended up 33rd in 3:07.1 and was followed by Silas Bartol (44th, 3:18.8) and Brayden Patch (47th, 3:26.8). The four that did make it through were Matthew Clarner (2nd, 2:44.8), Oliver Dolcino (24th, 3:00.9), Torsten Brickley (25th, 3:02.7), and Adam Jansen (27th, 3:03.2). Those places shuffled in the quarterfinal round, and unfortunately none were able to make it to the semifinals or finals. Brickley ended up as the top finisher for Clarkson, taking 19th out of 69 skiers in 3:03.48 and he was followed by Clarner in 21st with a time of 3:06.76. Jansen's quarterfinal time of 3:09.11 placed him 25th, and Dolcino ended up in 28th in the standings with a time of 3:28.33.
