Clarner in Top Five on First Day of USCSA National Championships

Lake Placid, NY - Sophomore Matthew Clarner of the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team finished fourth out of 69 competitors in the 7.5K Classic race on day one of the USCSA National Championships held at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The Golden Knights' men finished just off the podium, taking fifth among 11 teams while the Clarkson women placed 12th out of 14 teams. The USCSA National will resume with an individual sprint on Wednesday.

On a warm day in which many of the participants were wearing t-shirts on the snow and the track was a little muddy, Clarner was able to maintain his skis and finish fourth overall with a time of 21:37.8, just 39.2 seconds off the pace. The next finisher for the Knights was Torsten Brickley, who took 25th place with a time of 24:04.6, and he was followed by Silas Bartol in 29th in 24:48.4 to close out Clarkson's team score. Adam Jasnen was the fourth finisher for Clarkson, coming in 33rd overall in 25:04.9. Just outside the top half were Nathaniel Burke (41st, 25:52.2), Braydon Patch (44th, 26:09.9), and Oliver Dolcino (46th, 26:22.4).

On the women's side, Skylar Francis led the Golden Knights' women, placing 27th out of 58 skiers with a time of 29:26.1. Clare Janas and Janneke Baks finished back-to-back, with Janas taking 52nd in 40:45.9 and Backs claiming the 53rd spot in 42:23.5.
