CU Nordic Skiing Preview - at Paul Smiths Invitational (2/7-8)

The shortest road trip of the season awaits the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team this weekend, as they travel less than an hour away to ski at one of the Golden Knights' homes away from home, the Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths College.

The Events: Cold weather awaits the two races this weekend, as the 15K Skate slated for Saturday may be shortened somewhat. Sunday is a Classic Team Sprint Relay, an event that the Knights performed well in back in mid-January.

The Men: Back in January, a field of 25 teams raced a 3x3 relay with each skier performing multiple loops of 1.7K in Vermont. This weekend's spring relay will be somewhat shorter, with the course scheduled to be anywhere from 1.3K to 1.6K. Matthew Clarner, Adam Jansen, and Torsten Brickley combined to take second out of 25 teams in the first relay of the year, which was only 18.1 seconds off the pace. Finn Payne, Nathaniel Burke, and Silas Bartol also performed well, placing sixth in 41:57.4.

The Women: With only three healthy, Skylar Francis, Janneke Baks, and Clare Janas will be the collective for the women's race, and that trio finished 15th in the field of 27 squads in mid-January. Francis has performed well in a couple of shorter Skate races this year, most recently taking third out of 22 skiers in a 10K Skate race in Middlebury with a time of 28:37.7.
