It is a return to Rikert this weekend for the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team, as the Golden Knights travel to Vermont for the second time in three weeks this time for the ECSC Divisionals.

The Races: Saturday's event is scheduled to be a 1.4K Skate Sprint with the qualifiers beginning at 10:00 am. The quarterfinal heats will then start at 11:30, and the whittling down process will conclude with the finals right around 1:00 pm. On Sunday, the teams will compete in a 7.5K Classic with an interval start. The women's race begins at 10:00 am and the men's race is slated for 11:00 am.

The Men: Matthew Clarner should be a favorite in the finals, as he won the sprint event in the UMF Invitational at the end of January, topping the field by close to six seconds. Adam Jansen and Torsten Brickley would have also challenged for the 'A' finals that day as they finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Although that field was a bit smaller (35), Clarkson had a number of others in the top 15 that day, including Oliver Dolcino (8th), Braydon Patch (10th), Nathaniel Burke (11th), and Silas Bartol (15th). Last weekend the Knights and the rest of the field participated in a 7.5K race, although it was a Skate style rather than Classic. Regardless, the Knights have skied in both recently, the 7.5K Skate last week at Paul Smiths and a 10K Classic, also at UMF two weeks ago. Clarner won the 7.5K Skate a week ago and was second in the 10K Classic in Maine.

The Women: The Golden Knights' women do not have the same numbers as the men, but junior Skylar Francis has enjoyed some solid results this winter, and usually in larger fields compared to the men's races. She finished ninth out of 58 skiers in the sprint race in Maine, closing out her time shy of four minutes (3:53.6). Just last weekend, she placed third among 65 skiers in the 7.5K Skate (26:54.7) and was ninth out of 51 skiers in the 10K Classic in Maine (43:55.9). Janneke Baks has gotten better as the season has gone on and was 37th in the sprint, while Clare Janas took 47th in the same event at Titcomb Mountain.
