Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Overtime Score with 4.4 Seconds To Go from Manness as Knights Down Dartmouth, 2-1

Hanover, NH – After working the puck around the zone for 35 seconds with her teammates, Sara Manness took the final shot of the game for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, netting the game-winner in overtime with only 4.4 seconds left in the extra time to gain a 2-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Dartmouth at Thompson Arena.

The victory pushed Clarkson's record to 17-7-d overall and 10-3-2 in conference play, while the Big Green went to 4-16-3 and 2-10-3. The Golden Knights will face Harvard University on Saturday afternoon.

Currently on one of the hottest streaks of any player in the country on either the women's or men's side, Sara Manness netted the game-winner with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. She had possessed the puck for much of the 40 second stretch in the Dartmouth zone, basically forcing a one shot set-up in the final possession. When nothing came clean, Manness decided to take her time and hit the top corner, beating the Dartmouth defense for the second time in the game.

Clarkson dominated the opening period, but it did not show on the scoreboard. Dartmouth was whistled for an early penalty and the Golden Knights' talented power play unit went to work, taking five shots on the Dartmouth net, but none were particularly difficult to turn aside for Michaela Hesova. The best chance of the first came a few moments after the conclusion of the power play opportunity when Madison Chantler took a shot from the right circle and the rebound went into the slot for Raedyn Spademan. Her shot from the hashes was also denied to keep the game scoreless.

The Green and Gold ended the period with a 20-3 edge in total shots and led 14-3 in shots on goal in the first period.

It was more of the same for the Knights in the second period, though it was Dartmouth that surprised with a goal late in the period, on just its third shot of the period and sixth overall. The goal came on a seemingly innocuous attempt from the left point. Izee Powell hit a shot with decent pace from just inside the blue line it appeared as if Arianne Leblanc had made the stop and was going to turn the shot aside and into the corner. However, the shot had enough pace to it and the angle of Leblanc's stick wasn't quite square with the attempt, turning her stick just enough to trickle in at 15:23 of the second period.

While on a 4-on-4 in the final moments of the second period, Clarkson nearly tied the game when Kate Manness had a shot in the slot that was stopped. She pounced on the rebound for a backhand, but again Hesova fell on top of the puck to end the chance, making it 1-0 through 40 minutes.

It took only 29 seconds to get on the scoreboard in the third period for the Golden Knights, and the goal came from a familiar name in Sara Manness. Keira Hurry worked the puck around the net to Manon le Scodan just above the right circle in Clarkson's defensive end and passed the puck to Manness short of the blue line. Manness did the rest, skating up the left side and using a nifty stickhandling move to get around a Dartmouth defender near the blue line for an open look, and Manness sniped a shot into the top corner to make it 1-1, the ninth straight game in which Manness has scored a goal.

Over the final 10 minutes, the attempts were still weighted on Clarkson's side as the Knights allowed just two shots of any kind over the last stretch. Clarkson was busy in that same time, taking 10 shots on goal, including four in the final 45 seconds of the game as the Knights tried to avoid overtime. The Knights had a near make on a Manness one-timer on the doorstep, but the shot went wide, and a few seconds later, Rhea Hicks had a one-timer just south of the left circle which was also held up by Hesova.

In overtime, the best opportunity came for Dartmouth on 3-on-2 when a pass was centered into the slot right in front of the net, but Leblanc was able to clip the puck away with a little over two minutes to go in the extra session. That denial, and another in the final minute, allowed Clarkson to hold the puck for the final 45 seconds in the Dartmouth zone, tiring out the defense and allowing Manness to gain heroics once again.

Clarkson outshot Dartmouth 68-20 overall and 42-12 in terms of shots on goal, while also winning 35 of 58 faceoffs. Leblanc finished the game 11 saves and Hesova had 40 stops for Dartmouth.
