Overtime Score by Severo Sends Knights-Harvard Series to Game 3

Potsdam, NY – An overtime goal from Casey Severo will force the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a game three of its ECAC Quarterfinal series against Harvard as the Golden Knights suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Crimson on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The game two defeat in the best-of-three series saw Clarkson drop to 22-11-3 overall while Harvard edges up to 13-16-3. The two teams play a deciding game at 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoon at Cheel.

Harvard's overtime game-winner came just a minute after the Knights nearly ended the game and the series at the other end. A pass through the slot found Ryan Richardson all alone at the left wing circle, but his one-time attempt was denied by Harvard's Aku Koskenvuo on a sprawling pad save with his right leg near the five-minute mark of the frame. Seventy seconds later, the Crimson capitalized on a second rebound to score the go-ahead goal. Mick Thompson's first shot from the top of the slot was either blocked or saved, but regardless it bounced all the way back to his stick for another attempt, with the second definitely denied by Ethan Langenegger. However, the rebound ended up on the stick of Casey Severo, who flipped in a backhand at 6:09 in overtime to end the contest.

As the team has done so many times this year, the Knights got on the scoreboard very early to put pressure on their opponents, finding the back of the net only 2:09 into the game. Clarkson found itself in transition with a 2-on-1 near center ice with Erik Bargholtz carrying it in on the right side and Trey Taylor on the left. A pass to Taylor caused the goalie and defender to shift, and Bargholtz got the puck back on the give-and-go, tapping it in only two minutes into the contest.

Not many shots made their way through to challenge the goaltender in the first period, as the two teams combined for just 13 in the opening 20 minutes, but the teams were busy at the start of the second at least in the success rate. Clarkson went up 2-0 when Jack Sparkes collected the puck off a Harvard clear near his own blue line and quickly pass the puck forward to the Harvard blue line for Ryan Bottrill. The player who scored two goals on Friday night waited for Talon Sigurdson to fill the slot and Sigurdson hit a shot past Aku Koskenvuo only 56 seconds into the second period.

While the public address announcer was still announcing the assists for Clarkson's second goal of the game, Harvard pulled back to within one. Zakary Karpa applied pressure with a forecheck when the bouncing puck went uncleared and he skated around the net for a quick wrap around goal at 1:40. Barely two minutes later, the Crimson tied the game on the power play. A Lucas St. Louis slap shot from the point was denied by Ethan Langenegger, but the rebound went right back to Mason Langenbrunner, and he finished off the play from the bottom of the left wing circle at 3:50.

It looked like Harvard might head into the second intermission up a goal when the Crimson scored on a tip in by Jack Bar off a pass from Cam Johnson, but upon further review it was discovered that Harvard was offside on the play since Johnson's back skate was ahead of the puck on re-entering the zone. Neither team found the back of the net over the final two-and-a-half minutes, sending the game to the third period tied 2-2.

Clarkson finished the game with a 61-43 edge in total shots and a 26-21 lead in shots on goal. Harvard went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Golden Knights never had a power play to speak of during the game. Ethan Langenegger made 18 saves for Clarkson and Koskenvuo had 24 stops for the Crimson.
