Sukovic Scores in Overtime to Send Knights to Lake Placid with 2-1 Win Over Harvard

Potsdam, NY – Late game heroics were required for the third straight day and it was Luka Sukovic that snuck in the game-winner in overtime as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team survived its best-of-three series against Harvard University with a 2-1 in game three of the ECAC Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights move on to Lake Placid for the championship round, beginning with an ECAC Semifinal match up against Dartmouth University. Clarkson improved to 23-11-3 on the season while Harvard saw its season come to a close at 13-17-3.  The win puts the Knights back in Lake Placid for the first time in three seasons, when Harvard, oddly enough, was the team that ended their season in the ECAC Semifinals.

Clarkson won the first game of the series in the final 30 seconds of the third period, while the Crimson won game two about five minutes into overtime on Saturday. In yet another tight game, Sukovic was the top star of the game with his overtime game-winner at 7:10. Harvard had cleared the zone, but Kaelen Taylor regained possession in his own end and quickly sent a long pass back to the other blue line to keep the Knights attacking. Eventually it was Taylor that sent a pass towards Sukovic on right wing side, and the freshman needed to extend his stick to gain possession, but that was enough to get Aku Koskenvuo out of position, and Sukovic did enough stick handling to slide the puck across the line for the goal.

The lone goal of the first two periods came while the teams were on their first special teams opportunity, Clarkson on the power play and Harvard on the penalty kill. However, it was the Crimson that would score while down a player when Mick Thompson made a good read off the faceoff in the Harvard defensive end. Clarkson won the faceoff and a pass back to Ayrton Martino at the right point was snuffed out by Thompson as he stuck his stick out and chipped the puck out of the zone. The play allowed Thompson to go in on Ethan Langenegger with a breakaway, and Thompson finished off his play by going late to his right and using a backhand to flip the puck beyond the Clarkson goalie's reach at 14:11 in the first period and only seven seconds into the penalty kill.

Both teams were on the power play twice in the first two periods, but opportunities were few and far between as each team registered just two shots over the course of four minutes while up a player. As has been the case in the previous two games, both squads did an excellent job of blocking shots and cutting off passing lanes both on the penalty kill and while at even strength. Clarkson did have a solid opportunity late in the second period when the puck slid out to Trey Taylor in the slot, but Harvard goaltender Aku Koskenvuo moved out to the top of the crease, dropped his leg pads to cut down any corner shots, and gloved the puck out of the air on his left side at 14:31.

The third period saw the Knights buzzing along early with 16 total shots in the first 10 minutes of the stanza, though just seven of those challenged Koskenvuo. A power play near the midway point of the frame put Clarkson up a skater and the Green and Gold were finally able to get on the board. Ellis Rickwood pulled the puck down low on the left wing side and sent a pass out to the point along the boards to Trey Taylor, where the junior put one on the goal. At the bottom of the circle, Ayrton Martino was able to get enough of the puck for a redirect, beating Koskenvuo for his 24th goal of the year.

In overtime, Harvard nearly won the contest when a shot was deflected up in the air near Langenegger, but the ECAC Goalie of the Year spun around and knocked the puck out of the air and away from the net before covering it up a few seconds later on a less dangerous shot attempt.

Langenegger finished with 25 saves in the contest and Koskenvuo had 39 stops for Harvard as Clarkson outshot the Crimson 41-26. Clarkson finished 1-for-3 on the power play and Harvard was 0-for-3 while up a skater.
