CU Volleyball Preview - vs. Hartwick/Oswego State (9/7)

Back in its own time zone after opening the year on the West Coast, the Clarkson University Volleyball team takes on a pair of New York foes on Saturday, facing Hartwick College at 11:00 am and Oswego State at 3:00 pm.

The Series: It has been well over a decades since the Golden Knights last faced Hartwick College, facing the Hawks in 2011. The Green and Gold has a narrow 17-15 lead against the Hawks in the all-time series, but has won nine of 11 meetings since 2000. Clarkson also is just a single game up against Oswego State (21-20), though the Golden Knights have won eight of nine versus the Lakers since 2003.

Key Stats for Clarkson (1-3): Facing teams from Washington and California in the first weekend of 2024, the Golden Knights tried a few different things. The team used a pair of setters, with Ashley Currier also contributing up front on offense. Currier had 3.79 assists, 3.50 digs, and 1.29 kills per set in the first four matches of the year, while her counterpart Anna Mayer had 4.08 assists, 2.31 digs, and 0.46 aces per set. Allyson Treichel hit .333 in four matches, averaging 2.36 kills per set to go along with 0.57 blocks per set.

Key Stats for Hartwick (3-0): The Hawks are relying heavily on three outside hitters in all-around roles. Shelby Swartz is producing 4.18 kills, 2.82 digs, and 0.82 aces per set, Staecia Silofau averages 3.80 kills and 3.70 digs per set, and Shaelyn Thornton is contributing 3.45 kills and 3.64 digs per set while hitting .342 so far. Braelyn Hornick has been the main distributor, averaging 12.27 assists per set for the Hawks, as the team is scoring better than 14 kills per set so far.

Key Stats for Oswego State (3-1): Like Hartwick, Oswego State is also leaning on its outsides for all-around numbers. Priscilla McReynolds is hitting .284 and leads the team with 3.08 kills and 3.62 digs per set. Grace Gdovin's offense isn't quite up to McReynolds' early pace, averaging 2.17 kills, but her 3.17 digs per set are solid in the back. Kailey Vugteveen has been precise from the service line, notching 0.93 aces per set through four matches in 2024.
