Knights Score Two Wins, Move Winning Streak to Eight

Potsdam, NY – Moving its match winning streak to eight straight, the Clarkson University Volleyball team picked up its first Liberty League win of the season over Skidmore College in four sets (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17) and then swept its crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam in three (25-13, 25-16, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-2 on the season. Two more league foes await next weekend when Clarkson heads down Route 11 to take on St. Lawrence University on Friday and then returns home Saturday to host William Smith College.

Clarkson bookended its match against Skidmore with two impressive offensive displays, hitting .480 (15-3-25) and .385 (18-3-39) in the first and fourth sets, respectively, which saw the Knights hold significant leads throughout. The first set the Knights jumped out to a 9-3 advantage after a kill from Jordyn Leader, extended it to seven points off a kill by Chase Chudoba (13-6) and maintained it following a kill from Ainslie Reimer (19-12). Clarkson never trailed in the first game of match.

The second set the offense was a little more pedestrian as Skidmore turned an early deficit into a four-point lead (14-10) following an ace from Marlowe McIntyre. Clarkson rallied back to tie the set at 18-=18 and took the lead briefly at 20-19. The Knights still led by one a few points later (22-21) after a kill from middle Amelia Bartfalvi, but Skidmore finished off the set with four straight points, receiving a well-timed block by Gabriella Imburgia and back-to-back kills from Chloe Heitman.

Set number three again saw Clarkson jump out to an early advantage with four straight points. Though Skidmore would come back to tie the game 9-9, the Knights never trailed in the third set, winning six of the next seven points to return the margin to five points. The Thoroughbreds trimmed it back to two, but a big stretch by Clarkson's offense, including two kills from Bartfalvi, allowed the Knights breathing room down the stretch as they captured the third game.

The Knights again never trailed in the fourth set, building a modest lead to start and never allowing Skidmore to within less than three points. The margin was three (20-17) late, but the Knights went on a run to close out the match, picking up an ace from Olivia Baxter and consecutive kills by Ainslie Reimer to end the set.

Four Clarkson players reached double digits in kills in the first match against Skidmore, led by Ainslie Reimer's 14. Chase Chudoba had the highest hitting percentage of that group thanks to a 13-2-31 line (.355) while Conley Burns added 12 kills and Amelia Bartfalvi added 10 more kills. Jordyn Leader almost joined the group with nine kills of her own as Brianna Hale produced 47 assists. Chudoba posted three solo blocks while Bartfalvi and Leader combined to produce four total blocks (four block assists each). Olivia Baxter chipped in 17 digs on the defensive side.

Chloe Heitman recorded 16 kills to lead Skidmore and Oai Hughes hit .571 with eight kills on just 14 attempts. Catriona Hoelperl recorded 33 assists and 10 digs and Marlowe McIntyre contributed 16 digs for the Thoroughbreds.

The second match of the day for the Knights was a strong defensive showing as Clarkson frustrated Potsdam's offense enough to force them into a negative hitting percentage in each of the three games. Potsdam had at least two more attack errors than it did kills in each of the three games, finishing 16-23-91 (-.077) against Clarkson's 40-18-88 (.250).

Clarkson rolled out to an 11-3 lead in the first set, gaining points first on Potsdam errors before getting kills from Conley Burns and Jordyn Leader to close out a 6-0 run. The Bears pulled back to within five on a few occasions, but the Knights always had an answer with a handful of points, eventually expanding the margin to 10 (20-10) and finishing up by 12.

The Knights began the second set with the first six points, mixing in offense with Potsdam miscues. Clarkson pushed its lead to eight points thanks to a block combination of Trinity Simon and Jordyn Leader (14-6). It looked like the Knights were on their way to another easy win when Emma Cortez aced the Bears and put the score at 23-12, but Potsdam rallied back to within eight before a kill from Conley Burns ended the set.

Potsdam had its first lead of the match when it score three of the first four points in the third set, only to see the Knights score the next four and take the lead. Clarkson would never relinquish its edge, picking up two kills by Chase Chudoba and another by Brianna Hale to make it 9-4. The gap pushed to nine (17-8) before Potsdam picked up five of the next six, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout. That was pretty much the last gasp for the Bears as Izzie Piano scored consecutive aces and to put the lead back to eight, and Emma Cortez ended the math with yet another ace.

Brianna Hale notched 28 assists to go along with seven digs and three kills. Conley Burns posted 11 kills with Ainslie Reimer adding in 10 kills. Chase Chudoba had four kills and three blocks, Izzie Piano had three aces and five digs, and Olivia Baxter led the defense with 11 digs.

For Potsdam, Ashley Shiu and Ella Murtagh each had four kills and Noelle Redeye had three kills with two block assists. Rachel Madore and Ashlee Hagerman each had 10 digs for the Bears.
