Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Strong First Period Leads to 6-3 Win Over Stonehill

Potsdam, NY – For the first time in nearly 100 games, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team scored four goals in the first period, putting Stonehill College on its heels early in a 6-3 victory Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

Post Game interview with Coach Houle

Clarkson improved to 6-3-1 overall on the season while Stonehill fell to 3-7-0 on the year. The Golden Knights open up ECAC Hockey play next weekend when the team travels to take on Rensselaer and Union.

The six goals scored matched the most by the Knights (several occasions) since Clarkson scored seven late in the 2021-22 season against Princeton (7-1). The four goals in the first period were the most by the Knights in the opening frame since the team tallied six times against Union College on January 15, 2022, a stretch of 98 games.

The Knights first goal of the contest came when Clarkson had a seemingly harmless drop into the Skyhawks zone along the boards, but Stonehill couldn't clear it. Once the battle for the puck along the boards ended, the puck bounced off stick blades and skates and found its way to Talon Sigurdson, who wristed a shot from the left circle over the stick side shoulder of Stonehill netminder Connor Androlewicz at 5:24.

Only 28 seconds later Clarkson picked up another goal. On a quick transition from their own end, the Golden Knights went through the neutral zone on the left hand side. Luka Sukovic had a chance to pass to the right circle but patiently waited for Tate Taylor to fill the lane in the slot. Taking one stride to his right, Taylor lifted a shot through Androlewicz.

Clarkson continued to apply plenty of offensive pressure and put up a third number on the scoreboard at 9:16. Again on a quick transition out of its own defensive zone, Brady Egan was on the right side and let Luka Sukovic fill in at the slot, and Sukovic went high over the glove of Androlewicz to put the score at 3-0, forcing Stonehill to take a timeout to regroup.

The break slowed things down slightly, but it was only a reprieve. Trey Taylor created a breakaway opportunity for Garrett Dahm when he deflected a pass/shot off his leg and the puck went into the neutral zone for Dahm. Dahm then skated in and what looked like an initial save ended up being the fourth goal as the puck trickled through the pads of the goaltender.

The second period was just as busy as the first in terms of goals, but Stonehill was the team that found the back of the net on three occasions to get back into the contest. The first came at 9:33 on the power play when Henry Schriefels used a screen to beat Ethan Langenegger. Immediately after the media timeout a minute later, the Knights regained their four-goal advantage when Kaelen Taylor pushed in a centering feed from Brady Egan. Less than two minutes later, Zach Aben scored when he gathered up a loose puck near the Stonehill bench, skated in on the right side, and wristed in a goal at 12:13. The final goal of the frame came when Joseph Grainda snuck behind the Clarkson defense while the puck was near the Stonehill bench again, as a quick pass through the neutral zone found Grainda just onside and he was able to wrist in another score at 17:15.

Nothing changed in the third as Clarkson offense continued to create chances with steady work. In transition, a collision just inside the Stonehill zone caused some mayhem, with Luke Pakulak trying to send a pass into space. The attempt was blocked, but Pakulak kept skating hard towards the net, picked up the loose puck and knocked it in at 4:05 to put the margin back to three goals.

Post Game interview with Luke Pakulak

Clarkson outshot Stonehill 25-19. The Knights were 0-for-4 on the power play and the Skyhawks went 1-for-4 up a skater. Ethan Langenegger made 17 saves for Clarkson and Connor Androlewicz produced 19 saves for Stonehill.
