Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Strong Finish Gives Knights 3-1 Win Over RPI

Troy, NY – Over the final 40 minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team outshot Rensselaer 26-11 and the margin showed on the scoreboard as well, as the Golden Knights put up three goals over the final 30 minutes to claim a 3-1 victory against the Engineers to open ECAC Hockey play on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-3-1 and 1-0-0 in league play with the victory, while the Engineers fell to 4-4-1 and 0-1-0. Clarkson will take on Union on Saturday afternoon.

Most of the first period was full of hard skating and transition from end-to-end, but not much in the way of scoring chances for either team. In the latter half of the first, the ice began to tilt downhill in Clarkson's direction as the Knights began to put pressure on the Engineers. The first quality look for the Knights came when Kaelan Taylor took a hard shot from the top of the left circle, but it wound up in the bread basket of RPI goaltender Noah Giesbrecht at 14:23. A few minutes later while Clarkson was getting ready to go up a player after a whistle on the Engineers, Ryan Richardson nearly made it 1-0 when he skated around the RPI defense and through the slot only to be denied by the right blocker of Giesbrecht. During the power play over the final 90 seconds of the frame, Clarkson had a pair of shots, but one was blocked and the other saved to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.

Both teams had decent chances in the first half of the second period. RPI had a 2-on-1 around the six-minute mark but one pass too many allowed the Clarkson defense to get back to block the shot. About 90 seconds later the Knights created a flurry of shots in a stretch of 30 seconds, but all were turned aside by Giesbrecht. Another 2-on-1 for the Engineers saw Clarkson goaltender Ethan Langenegger make one of his best saves of the game as he denied the shot with his left blocker.

The game's scoreless drought came to an end midway through the period. The puck was dug out from the left side boards and found the stick of Jared Mangan near the top of the left circle. He took a shot before the defense could recover, but his attempt was blocked to the left side boards. Right there was Trey Taylor to gather in the puck and he sent it back into the slot hoping to find the stick of a teammate. Tristan Sarsland was there to crash the net and tipped in the pass at 10:09 to make it 1-0.

Each team had chances late in the period as both had lengthy chances on the power play. Clarkson was up a skate for 1:45 before being called for an infraction, setting up a 4-on-4 for 15 seconds before the Engineers went on the power play for 1:45 as well, but both teams came up empty.

The Engineers were called for another penalty about five minutes into the third and Clarkson was busy on that one as well. RPI's defense had a long shift but successfully kept the Knights off the board, keeping the score at 1-0.

It wouldn't remain that way for long, however, as the Knights picked up an even-strength marker near the midway point of the third. Despite an icing call that brought the puck down into the Clarkson defensive zone, the Knights' offense was skating the other way right off the faceoff. The puck was flipped up high off the left side boards by Trey Taylor, allowing Ryan Richardson to skate off to the races. He went in hard to the right side post and his shot was tipped just enough so that it went off the post, scooting across the crease and goal line. Fortunately for the Knights, Ayrton Martino was there to tap it in while he too was crashing the net, making it 2-0 at 9:51.

For much of the final five-plus minutes, Clarkson skated down a player. The Knights were called for holding at 14:29, but killed off the penalty while allowing just a single shot. Just 30 seconds later, the Engineers pulled their goalie for the 6-on-5. RPI put plenty of pressure on the Knights in the defensive zone, but an errant pass to the left point found no Engineers in sight, allowing Talon Sigurdson to gather up the loose puck and shoot from center ice on the right side into the vacated net at 18:44.

The Engineers ended Clarkson's and Langenegger's shutout bid off a quick transition as two rapid passes gave Sutter Muzzatti a 1-on-1 with the goalie. A few quick moves put Muzzatti on his left side for an easy score with only 22.5 seconds remaining.

Clarkson finished with a 34-19 advantage in shots on goal, including a 26-11 margin over the final 40 minutes. Each team went scoreless on the power play, three tries for Clarkson and two empty chances for the Engineers. Langenegger finished with 18 saves, while Giesbrecht had 31 stops.
