Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Richardson Scores Twice as Knights Tie Alaska Fairbanks

Potsdam, NY – Senior captain Ryan Richardson scored a pair of goals for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, but the Golden Knights fell in the overtime shootout against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson saw its record go to 5-3-1 overall while the Nanooks moved to 2-5-1. The Green and Gold play a single non-league contest next weekend, hosting Stonehill College on Saturday evening.

After the two teams tied in regulation and the five-minute overtime at 3-3, Alaska was the lone team to score in the shootout with Chase Dafoe accounting for a goal in the Nanooks' three opportunities.

For the second straight night, Alaska came out strong, but the Golden Knights began to put significant pressure on the Nanooks near the midway point of the period. That tilting of the ice brought a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the period. The first came following a faceoff in the neutral zone as the puck was played deep into Alaska territory by Ryan Bottrill. Alaska tried to clear the puck from behind the net, but it was picked up by Jared Magnan in the right circle and passed into the slot, where Bottrill was waiting and connected on a wrist shot at 13:58.

Ryan Richardson Postgame Press Conference, 2 Goals vs Alaska Fairbanks

Clarkson got another goal in the opening period on the power play. Trey Taylor had the puck at the top of the slot and passed it down to Ayrton Martino. The two went back and forth before Martino centered the puck to Ryan Taylor, who settled the pass before attempting his shot. That turned out to be enough time for Ryan Richardson to fill in some space, as the puck went off Richardson and into the net at 16:31 to make it 2-0.

Although Clarkson dominated play in the second period, the Knights came up empty and saw their lead cut in half. The Knights could not score on three power play chances and outshot Alaska 30-12 in the period, though most of those chances were off target. Even when Alaska was up a skater, it was Clarkson that had the best chance with a short-handed miss from Garrett Dahm. Despite the Knights possessing the puck for much of the period, Alaska was able to score in the final 90 seconds went Kyle Gaffney's one-time rattled off the posts at 18:43.

Ayrton Martino Postgame Press Conference, Notched 100th Career Point in 2 Assist Outing

The two teams traded goals in the first minute and change to start the third period. Off the opening faceoff, the puck was sent deep into the Alaska defensive end, but Ayrton Martino quickly gained possession of the puck along the boards and just as fast sent a pass back into the slot, finding Ryan Richardson for an easy blast into an empty net only 10 seconds into the period. While Clarkson was still basking in the excitement of its third goal of the game and the 100th career point for Martino, Matt Hubbarde tipped the puck away from a Clarkson defender, allowing Chase Dafoe to pick up possession and try a shot against Marcus Brannman, which was denied, but Hubbarde was there to poke in the rebound at 1:04.

Following the television timeout, Alaska asked for a review on an open-ice hit to see if a penalty should have been called, but the contact was deemed clean. It mattered little, as the Nanooks got a gift goal on the faceoff in the Clarkson defensive end. Matt Rickard won possession behind the right circle and was trying to thread a pass through traffic, but it turned into a goal for the Nanooks when the puck was redirected off a skate and into the net at 12:16, tying the game 3-3.

The last strong chance in regulation came in the Clarkson end when Trey Taylor had a couple tries against Alaska's Nicholas Grabko, but the Nanooks goalie ended up falling on the loose puck in the crease to end the threat. Overtime saw the Knights possess the puck for nearly two straight minutes in the Alaska defensive end before the Nanooks broke out for the other end. Martino nearly ended the contest on the doorstep, but his shot was wide of the cage.

The two teams finished with 22 shots on goal apiece, though Clarkson had 69 shots total to Alaska's 43. Each team also went 1-for-4 on the power play. Grabko and Brannman each recorded 19 saves for their respective programs.
