Knights Fall to Farmingdale and Fredonia in Florida, Win Over Old Westbury

Clermont, FL – Two narrow losses confronted the Clarkson University Softball team upon its return to play after three games had been missed due to weather and the team's scheduled off day, as the Golden Knights fell 7-6 to Farmingdale State and dropped a 2-0 decision to Fredonia. However, the team rallied in its third contest of the day by claiming a 13-5 win over Old Westbury.

In the opener, Clarkson got its offense rolling with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Kelsea Flanagan started the rally with a one-out single and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt that actually put Ryleigh Fontana on as well via error. Emily Martin followed with a sacrifice fly to score the first run and Emily Bulone doubled in another run and Ivy Bokorski's single put the score at 3-0, all of the runs being unearned.

The Rams responded with five runs in the top half of the third, the first coming around on a Bailey Hammock two-out single. Farmingdale continued to get two-out magic with a two-run double from Alexandra Pole, an RBI single up the middle by Madison Sturtz, and another RBI single up the middle by Emily Lopez. Clarkson would get one run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out single by Flanagan that plated Lexi Rydelek.

Clarkson tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with Kendall Cuyler singling home Martin, who had led off the inning with a double. Cuyler was also the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. She walked and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt that had the corners crashing and the shortstop covering second, leaving the open base available. The head's up base running allowed her to score on a wild pitch, making it 6-5.

That would not be enough, however, as the Rams rallied with two in the top of the seventh. With two outs once again, Samantha Stolfi singled up the middle to tie the game and a Madison Sturtz single put the Rams up 7-6. Clarkson went down in order in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of fly outs and a strikeout in between.

Borkorski was 3-for-3 in the first game, Flanagan was 2-for-3, and Bulone went 2-for-2. Bella Hotchkiss took the loss for the Knights, striking out three over seven frames.

After pounding out 12 hits in the first game, Clarkson was limited to just three base knocks in the second contest of the day as the Knights engaged in a pitchers' duel. The Knights put runners in scoring position in the third thanks to a two-out double by Emily Bulone, and then again in the fifth and seventh innings. The fifth had Fontana reach on an error and advance all the way to third after a wild pitch and sac bunt, only to be stranded, and the seventh saw Brooke McConnell single and pinch-runner Kaelyn Buehler and Kendall Cuyler were on second and third with two outs. However, a fly out to center ended the contest.

Fredonia got all of the runs it would need in the fourth inning. Avery Hill doubled and then came around on a base hit from Brooke Caldwell. She would later score on a bases loaded error where Mia Eickhoff reached, making it 2-0.

Amanda Corrice was saddled with the loss for the Knights, giving up five hits and two free passes over six innings.

A late addition to the schedule was a third contest against Old Westbury in the late afternoon. Clarkson woke up offensively with 13 runs overall, scoring 12 in the first three frames. Old Westbury got one in the first inning, but Emily Bulone's double to left tied the game after the opening frame. Clarkson opened the contest in the second with five runs, with the big blow being a two-run triple by Isabel Haspil. Old Westbury picked up one in the top of the third to make it 6-2, but the Knights pushed six runs across in the bottom half of the inning. Run-scoring hits from Ry Garcia, Ryleigh Fontana, and Emily Bulone accounted for three of the first four runs in the frame, and Maddie Throumoulos put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run double. Old Westbury picked up three in the top of the fifth to keep the game alive momentarily, but Lexi Rydelek's single through the left side plated Bulone and put the gap back to eight, ending the game early.

Bulone was 4-for-4 in teh contest with three runs scored and three more driven in. Haspil, Rydelek, and Fontana each added two hits in the game. Avery McDonald picked up the win, giving up just one earned run on three hits in four innings of work.
