Knights Finish Up Florida Trip With Pair of Losses to Chicago and Amherst

Clermont, FL – Ending its flurry of recent games and makeups, the Clarkson University Softball team closed out its trip to Florida with a pair of losses, falling University of Chicago 8-3 and to Amherst College 9-4 on Thursday.

In the opener, Chicago scored its runs in bunches and had eight by the fourth inning. The Maroons picked up one in the first from a Hannah Schwager single, but tallied three in the third and four more in the fourth. A wild pitch scored Madeline Murphy and Audrey Hui's double plated another, while Mia Bocian's sac fly was the third RBI of the inning. In the fourth, Murphy had a sac fly and a bases loaded single from Eleanor Johnson made it 6-2. Mia Bocian then followed with a two-run double.

Clarkson had taken the lead in the bottom half of the second, but those were all of the runs that the Golden Knights would get until their final at bat. Ry Garcia singled to right and came home on a Maddie Throumoulos triple to right-center. Throumoulos then scored on a single to center by Ryleigh Fontana, putting Clarkson up 2-1 before the Maroons responded with seven runs in the next two frames. Clarkson had its chances in the fourth and sixth, leaving two runners on in both of those innings. Clarkson picked up one more run in the game thanks to a full-count, two-out solo shot to left-center by Lexi Rydelek.

Ry Garcia had three hits in the game and Throumoulos also was 2-for-4. Janzen Long and Garcia threw the first 4.1 innings, giving up eight earned, and Bella Hotchkiss tossed the final 2.2 innings, striking out two and giving up four hits in that stretch.

Crooked numbers continued to be the theme in the second game for the Golden Knights as well. Amherst plated four in its first at bat of the game, with Abby Moravek doubling in the first run of the game and Lauren Ro following with a single to center to plate another. Ro then stole second and Moravek scored on the throwing error, and Ro came around on another throwing error later in the inning to make it 4-0.

Clarkson responded with four in the top of the second, beginning with a single from Kendall Cuyler that plated Karyssa Parker. Kaelyn Buehler drove in Ry Garcia with a sac fly to right for the second run, Ryleigh Fontana doubled home Throumoulos, and Haspil singled in Fontana to tie the game at 4-4.

The Mammoths picked up a run in the fourth thanks to a Jayla Adkins RBI single, and Amherst stretched the margin with four more in the fifth. Abby Kong singled home Heidi Li, Brooke Wild reached on an error allowing Kong to score, and Adkins again came through, this time with a two-run double to right-center.

Isabel Haspil was the only Clarkson player with a multi-hit game in the second contest, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Amanda Corrice took the loss, throwing four innings and giving up five runs, though only three were earned. Avery McDonald tossed the final two frames, giving up four runs, with just one earned.
