Clermont, FL – Fresh off winning its first game of the year on Tuesday, the Clarkson University Softball team earned a sweep on Wednesday, gaining an 8-0 victory over Blackburn and then taking Southern Maine 5-2 in its penultimate day in Florida.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-7 on the season and have games against Worcester State and Lawrence University awaiting on Thursday to close out the 10-game spring swing in Florida.

In the opener, the Knights struck for 11 hits in five innings to run-rule the Beavers with a walk-off hit in their final at bat. Clarkson scored three in the first inning, the opening run coming on a single by Zoey Kovach to plate Elissa Uveino. Elizabeth Greco then doubled to center to plate both Kovach and Isabel Haspil for an early 3-0 lead. The next runs for the Knights came in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer to center by Emma Sabourin, and then the Knights ended the contest in the fifth. Devin Fitzpatrick singled and moved to second on a walk, eventually scoring on an infield single. Elizabeth Greco scored on a wild pitch for the seventh run and Kaya Johnson singled in the eighth run to close out the game.

Both Sabourin and Greco each drove in two runs for the Knights, while Uveino and Maddie Throumoulos each went 2-for-3. Amanda Corrice picked up the win, tossing four shutout innings and allowing just for hits, while Lily Corrice tossed a scoreless fifth for the Knights.

Game two saw opportunities few and far between in the first three innings as each team lacked base runners. That changed in the fourth as Zoey Kovach earned a leadoff walk and was pinch-ran for by Kaitlyn Buehler. A sac bunt moved Buehler up to second and Isabel Haspil then singled to put runners on the corner. A groundout and a walk loaded the bases, setting up Bridget Kerwin, who delivered the big blow with a double to center clearing the bases and putting herself in scoring position.

Southern Maine responded with two in the bottom half of the fourth when Meaghan Dufresne delivered a two-run homer, only to see Clarkson regain its three-run advantage in the top of the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Emma Sabourin plated one and Shaelee Torres scores on a passed ball to put the score at 5-2.

Neither team did much offensively with the bats, as each had only four hits in the contest. Devin Fitzpatrick gained the win, giving up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six frames. Bella Hotchkiss was awarded a save with a scoreless seventh, striking out two.
