Four-Point Afternoon For Martino, Shutout for Brannman as Knights Cruise Past Harvard 6-0

Potsdam, NY – The leading goal scorer and points scorer in the ECAC, Ayrton Martino recorded four points on two goals and two assists and finished with seven points overall for the weekend as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team shut out Harvard University 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 18-9-3 overall and 12-5-1 in ECAC Hockey contests, while the Crimson fell to 9-14-2 and 7-9-2. Clarkson has four games remaining in the regular season, beginning with a final road trip against Cornell and Colgate next weekend.

Post Game with Coach Houle

The first period was relatively quiet in terms of shots despite a quick pace in the opening moments. There were only two total shots on goal after the media timeout in the first period.

Things changed for the Knights as Clarkson truly opened up the offense with three goals in the second and then three more in the third. The first goal came less than three minutes into the second period as Tristan Sarsland started things by holding the puck along the boards on the right side in the Dartmouth defensive end. The puck scooted out to Ellis Rickwood, who sent a centering pass into the slot for Ayrton Martino, and he finished the play at 2:53 to break the scoreless drought.

Post Game with Marcus Brannman

The Knights then scored two goals just 11 seconds apart. Martino was on the right side at the top of the circle and sent a short side pass down to Ryan Richardson just in front of the crease. Richardson's attempt was tipped away but ended up on the stick of Ellis Rickwood on the weak side. All alone, Rickwood easily tapped the puck in for the goal making it 2-0 at 12:50. Immediately after Garrett Dahm went from the right circle to the left circle for Erik Bargholtz, as he ripped a one-timer for the score, with the second assist going to Luka Sukovic.

It was more of the same at the start of the third period. This time it was Ryan Richardson who scored off a circle-to-circle pass from Ayrton Martino, with an additional assist going to Trey Taylor at 4:02. Three minutes later, the rout was on, with Tate Taylor just keeping the puck in the zone and sending a pass to Martino. The senior made a few moves in front while essentially alone by the crease, sneaking the puck in at 7:28 and making it 5-0.

Post Game with Erik Bargholtz

With things getting chippy at the end, the Knights iced the game with yet another goal in the final four minutes. The play began with a long pass through multiple sections of the ice by Clarkson goaltender Marcus Brannman. Carter Rose held the puck near the point and dropped it off to Luke Pakulak and it was once again a circle-to-circle pass for the goal, as Erik Bargholtz tallied his second of the game from the left circle to make it 6-0 at 16:06.

Clarkson finished with a 26-17 edge in shots on goal, scoring on more than 20% of those attempts that found the cage. Overall, the shots were 61-32, with the Knights going 2-for-5 on the power play and Harvard ending up 0-for-1. Brannman made 17 stops for the shutout, his first of the season, while Aku Koskenvuo made 20 stops in the game for the Crimson.
