Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Roar Back with Five Goals in Final 27 Minutes to Down Michigan Tech, 6-4

Potsdam, NY – A quiet first period turned into an offensive outburst in the second and third for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, as the Golden Knights rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score three times in the second and then three more in the third, claiming a 6-4 win over Michigan Tech on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-4 with the victory at home, while Michigan Tech fell to 4-3 on the season. Clarkson takes on another foe from the Great Lakes State on Saturday, facing Lake Superior State in non-league action.

After a slow start by the Knights saw the Huskies earn a 2-0 advantage and then a 3-1 lead, Clarkson scored five goals over the final 27 minutes.

The Huskies jumped out in front just seven-plus minutes into the contest when Joe Prouty kept the puck in the zone and flipped a shot on net from the left point. Shane Soderwall made the save with his glove, but didn't snag it cleanly, and the puck dropped down to Carson Latimer, who took another shot right in front of the crease. Soderwall stopped that as well, but the next rebound was too much as Elias Jansson netted the loose puck at 7:20.

Three minutes later, the Huskies made it 2-0 as the team put together a solid counter with a quick transition, creating a 3-on-3 out of their own defensive zone. Latimer filled the lane on the right side and took a shot from the circle which was topped by the pad, but the puck popped out to the trailing forward Brayden Boehm, who converted at 10:14.

Clarkson had chances after the Huskies' first two goals, but somehow came up empty. Luke Pakulak almost scored on a wrap around, but the puck never squeaked over the line and the whistle was blown on a pile up in front of the net. With roughly five minutes to go, Owen Van Steensel created some space and an opening with some nifty stickhandling in front of the net, but was stoned by Michigan Tech goalie Owen Bartoszkiewicz. On the power play a few minutes later, both Van Steensel and Luka Sukovic were denied on shots as well.

The Knights would break through just a minute into the second period. Bartoszkiewicz went well outside of his net to play the puck and when he tried to get rid of it to the opposite side behind the goal it was picked clean by Erik Bargholtz. Reacting quickly, Bargholtz sent a pass into the slot for Jared Mangan, who easily netted the puck in the open space at 1:06. Michigan Tech would return the margin to two goals about 10 minutes later when the Huskies won an offensive zone faceoff at the left circle and quickly turned that into a one-timer for Teydon Trembecky at 11:39.

It took little time for Clarkson to rally, as it was back to a one-goal deficit in less than two minutes. Bryce Sookro took a shot from near the blue line near the right side boards and Shawn O'Donnell was able to craftily redirect the puck to make it 3-2 at 13:37. Three minutes after the second goal for the Knights, Clarkson came all the way back to tie the score, tallying its third goal on the counter attack. Ryan Bottrill had the puck near the right post and sent it through the slot to Van Steensel near the top of the left circle, and Van Steensel went top shelf to the far post at 16:53.

Clarkson tilted the ice in its direction for long stretches at the start of the third, but the best chance before the break came on a breakout by Carson Latimer for Michigan Tech, but his shot was denied by Soderwall. Barely a minute later, it was Clarkson that had a mini-break with Tristan Sarsland getting in close, only to have the puck kicked away by Bartoszkiewicz. Fortunately for the Knights, Sarsland's chance ended in a penalty against the Huskies, and Clarkson converted in the waning seconds of the power play chance. Tate Taylor took a shot in the slot near the right circle, but the shot was knocked down, though the puck took a friendly bounce to Owen Van Steensel on the doorstep on the right side, and the freshman forward finished off his second goal of the game at 10:29 in the third.

Clarkson's offense kept clicking while the two teams were both even as once again it was Bryce Sookro's shot that created the goal. Sookro took a shot from near the point on the right side and it was a wide rebound off the pad of the Michigan Tech goalie. Justin Cote was able to win the race to the loose puck near the dot of the left circle and he took no time take a shot, whipping the puck into the net at 14:31.

Michigan Tech pulled back to within one thanks to a power play chance. Late in the attempted penalty kill, the Knights blocked an attempt but didn't have enough to clear the puck out of the zone, allowing the Huskies another chance. A slap shot for Trembecky near the right circle beat Soderwall at 16:18, making the score 5-4.

Shortly after the goal, Bartoszkiewicz left the net for an extra attacker and Michigan Tech kept the puck in the zone for well over a minute, but two shots went wide and another shot was kicked away by Soderwall. However, the chance for the Huskies was nullified when they were whistled for too many men on the ice. Though Bartoszkiewicz left the net again, this time Clarkson was able to score while essentially even in skaters, tallying on the power play with just 1.9 seconds left as Bargholtz flipped the puck in from just a few feet away to close out the contest.

Clarkson closed out the game with a 31-28 edge in shots on goal (59-50 overall). The Huskies were adept defensively, blocking 15 shots. The Knights ended the game 2-for-4 on the power play and Michigan Tech had the same rate in half the chances at 1-for-2. Soderwall had 24 stops for the Knights, while Bartoszkiewicz did him one better with 25 saves.
