Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights' Conference Winning Streak Snapped Versus RPI

Potsdam, NY – Two goals separated by 44 seconds midway through the second period proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team came up short of its attempt at a weekend sweep, falling to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 4-1 in ECAC Hockey play Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their four-game winning streak in conference games come to an end, falling to 12-6-2 and 6-2-0 in ECAC Hockey while the Engineers moved to 9-10-2 and 4-6-0 in league contests. Clarkson heads to New England next weekend, facing Yale University and Brown University.

Post Game with Coach Houle

Although there were only 19 shots on goal combined between the two teams in the first period, it seemed as if all of them produced outstanding saves as both goaltenders made excellent stops. The first key denial came a little past the eight-minute mark. Ryan Richardson found Ayrton Martino on a break out with a long pass, but Martino never got a clean look as he was tied up from behind, giving the Knights a penalty shot. Martino skated in on the left side for his attempt but was denied by the right blocker of Noah Giesbrecht.

The Engineers ended up on the scoreboard first, tallying late in the opening period. William Gilson and Elliott McDermott went D-to-D near the blue line with McDermott taking the shot from the high slot. Nathan Sullivan provided some traffic in front and it deflected off him and past Clarkson's Ethan Langenegger at the 4:00 mark.

Although Clarkson had pressure on RPI in the second period, especially during a brief 4-on-3 and then the ensuing power play, it was the Engineers that would score back-to-back goals in less than 45 seconds near the midway point of the stanza. Jack Brackett skated in hard on the left side and slipped near the net, allowing the puck to go behind the cage. From there, Jimmy Goffredo attempted to get the puck back out to one of his defenders near the point or at the circle, but his pass took a fortunate path for RPI, bouncing off a Clarkson skate and redirecting into the slot for a wide open Dovar Tingling, who wristed a shot in at 8:14. The second goal in the flurry came off a mid-ice collision. A 2-on-1 in transition came about when Jake Gagnon shook off a hit in the neutral zone but stayed on his feet, allowing him to accept a pass in front of the odd-man rush from Brad McNeil, putting the Engineers up 3-0 at 8:58.

Post Game with Ryan Richardson

The Engineers lost some discipline in the third period and were called for three penalties in the first 12 minutes. RPI avoided any consequences from the first two infractions, but the Golden Knights got on the scoreboard just four seconds into the third try while up a skater. Ellis Rickwood won the faceoff and tipped it back to Ayrton Martino, setting up Ryan Taylor for a one-timer. Giesbrecht got a piece of it, but the puck slipped just inside his left post to make it 3-1 at 11:22.

Still down two a few minutes later, the Knights chose to pull their goaltender for an extra attacker, but a turnover allowed Dovar Tinling to score an unassisted empty net goal at 15:49. A minute later the goalie was out again, but neither team scored in the final three-plus minutes despite both teams having their advantages in that stretch.

Clarkson finished with a 35-23 lead in shots on goal and a 77-57 advantage in shot attempts overall. Ethan Langenegger made 10 saves in a period and a half of work and Marcus Brannman had nine saves in relief for Clarkson, while Noah Giesbrecht had 34 saves.
