Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Come Back From Two Down to Claim 5-3 Victory Over Union

Potsdam, NY – Senior Ayrton Martino scored two goals and assisted on another to help the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team earn a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Union College in ECAC Hockey action Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The 19th-ranked Golden Knights edge up into second place in the ECAC Hockey standings despite having played the fewest league games so far, improving to 12-5-2 overall and 6-1-0 in league contests, while Union fell to 11-8-1 and 5-4-0. Clarkson takes on RPI on Saturday to close out the weekend.

What appeared to a fairly slow start for both teams turned into an offensive slugfest in the final minute of the first period and that carried into the second stanza as well. Clarkson had the first six shots on goal but came up empty against the Garnet Chargers. Union's first shot on goal of the game found its way through traffic when Ben Muthersbaugh's wrist shot from the top of the left circle hit the post and bounced in at the 5:10 mark. It looked like that one Union marker would be it for the first period as the minutes ticked away, but each scored in the final 90 seconds. Ray Fust caught a pass from Tate Taylor and adeptly dropped to his feet near the blue line while entering the zone, allowing for a 2-on-1 with Talon Sigurdson, and Fust slipped pass through a diving defender to Sigurdson for the one-timer at 18:32. The Clarkson momentum, however, drifted away when Riley Brueck redirected a shot from Cullen Ferguson just 37 seconds later, putting Union back on top 2-1.

Another redirect put the Garnet Chargers up 3-1 early in the second period. Barely 90 seconds in, John Prokop took a shot from the left circle, just as Cullen Ferguson had at the end of the first period, and this time it was Josh Nixon who was able to tip the puck in at 1:34 making it 3-1.

Clarkson would not go away, though, tying the game less than eight minutes later. The second goal of the game for the Knights came on a rifled shot from the right circle by Jack Sparkes that didn't find its home, but Luke Pakulak gained control behind the net and sent a no-look backhand pass to Ayrton Martino in the slot, and the senior converted at 3:59 to put the score at 3-2. Martino was a part of the game-tying third goal as well. Union turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Martino picked up possession on his stick near the blue line, flipping a pass through the slot for an up-close one-timer by Ryan Richardson, knotting the game up 3-3 at 9:11.

Clarkson completed the comeback with a goal midway through the third period. On the power play, Jared Mangan entered the zone with the puck and wristed a hard shot off the bottom of the crossbar and again off the back bar for a goal, putting the Knights up 4-3 at 9:28. Clarkson picked up a vital score late in the contest as well, making sure that an empty net wouldn't put home fans on the edge of their seat. A turnover from behind the Union net found the stick of Trey Taylor, and he sent a pass into the slot where another wicked one-timer from Ayrton Martino provided the Knights some breathing room at 5-3.

Post Game with Ayrton Martino

The Golden Knights ended the game with a 37-20 advantage in shots, outshooting Union in each of the three periods. Clarkson scored once on the power play and held the Garnet Chargers empty on two tries. Ethan Langenegger produced 17 saves for Clarkson and Kyle Chauvette stopped 32 shots for Union.
