Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson opens the season with 9-0 win at St. Michael's

The Clarkson Golden Knights showed a glimpse of what's to come this season with a balanced scoring attack coming from multiple positions and class years.  In a 9-0 win over Saint Michael's in Burlington, VT, 9 different Knights scored and 13 total skaters got on the scoresheet.

Haley Winn opened the scoring just 2:42 into the game, when Nicole Gosling fed her from the opposite point, Baylee Kirwan would get the second assist.  The Knights would continue to hammer shots at St. Mike's Goalie, Annika Lavender, but she was able to withstand the early barrage until Jenn Goodwin made it 2-0 at 12:29.  Sidney Fess would get her first points as a Golden Knight with an assist.  Fess would extend the lead on the Power Play, with her first goal as a Golden Knight at 17:28.  Fellow transfer, Madison Chantler and freshman, Raedyn Spademan would get their inaugural points in the Green & Gold on the goal.

After 20 minutes, the shots recorded sat at 31-1 and shot attempts at 56 for the Knights.

Clarkson would continue to own the offensive time of possession and shot advantage in the 2nd period.  Keira Hurry would put the Knights up 4-0, followed by Shelby Laidlaw to make it 5-0.  In a goal that was the direct result of the pressure that the Knights were putting on shift after shift, Rhea Hicks scored on what became a 5-2 rush, as the Purple Knights, so desperate to make the long change, got caught on the rush back and Hicks converted from Winn and Gosling.

In a record setting night for the St. Mikes Goalie and the Clarkson offense, the 3rd period saw Lavender make her 65th save, which surpassed her career high.  The 89 shots on net for the Knights also sets a record for most shots on net in a game, beating 70 shots on goal vs Colby back in the early days of the program (credit to T. Szarka's research)  Lavender would be relieved of duty midway through the 3rd period, Kenna Dans would see her first collegiate action allowing 2 goals on 11 shots.  Spiderman, Gosling, and Andie Proulx would finish off the scoring for the Knights.

Julia Minotti would make 6 saves for her first win and shut out of the season.  Clarkson was 1 for 3 on the power play and did not take any penalties.

The two teams will be back at Cairns Arena tomorrow in Burlington for a 3:00 pm start.
