Knights Split Opening Doubleheader of Liberty League Versus SLU

Potsdam, NY – Junior Devin Fitzpatrick struck out the 200th hitter of her career and blasted her fifth home run of the season as the Clarkson University Softball team split its first conference doubleheader of the season against St. Lawrence University, winning the first 5-3 but falling in the second game in extras 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-10 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence saw its record go to 11-6 and 1-1. Clarkson is scheduled to play Oswego State on Wednesday, but that game may move up a day due to the weather forecast.

Clarkson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first four frames against St. Lawrence in the opening contest. Fitzpatrick drove in Katy Aldous in the first on a bases loaded sac fly after two walks and an error filled the bases. In the fourth, Emma Sabourin delivered a two-run single to put Clarkson up 3-0, and seemingly in a solid spot. However, the Saints pushed three across in the top of the fifth thanks to a Maeve Thompson RBI-single and a two-run single from Meredith Rose.

The tie would be brief, however, as Devin Fitzpatrick led off the bottom of the fifth. She worked the count to 3-1 and then drove a deep fly ball to right-center, easily clearing the fence to the left side of the scoreboard to put the Knights back on top, 4-3. Clarkson would pick up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Katy Aldous scored on a wild pitch, and Fitzpatrick took care of the rest with two ground outs and a fly out to end the contest.

Fitzpatrick went seven innings, allowing five hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Izzy Melanson took the loss, allowing three earned runs out of four, walking four and striking out two in five innings.

Game two saw St. Lawrence score five times in the first two innings, but the Saints were held off the scoreboard for the next five innings, allowing Clarkson to make a comeback. The Saints picked up two on a double by Sofia Berryhill in the first while Vivian Johnson doubled in two in the second and Meredith Rose sent another in with a double as well. In that same time, Clarkson had just one run when Fitzpatrick doubled in Elizabeth Greco in the bottom of the first.

Clarkson made a move in the bottom of the fourth as Sabourin singled home Isabel Haspil and Katy Aldous drove in Kaya Johnson to make it 5-3. It wasn't until the seventh that Clarkson clawed its way back to a tie. With two outs, Fitzpatrick reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner Karyssa Parker. Bridget Kerwin singled up the middle and Zoey Kovach walked to load the bases. Isabel Haspil then lifted a single over the infield to score two, tying the game at 5-5.

St. Lawrence would regain the lead and pick up the win in the ninth. With runners on first and third, Allison Kloft took a chance with a two-strike count by laying down a bunt. Zoey Kovach retrieved the ball in front and attempted to make a diving tag on Maeve Thompson, but Thompson eluded the play to score the Saints' sixth run. A sac fly from Meredith Rose then scored Vivian Johnson to make it 7-5. In the bottom half of the ninth, Clarkson brought the game-tying run to the plate on three occasions after Elizabeth Greco reached on an error to open the inning, but the ball never the left the infield and the game concluded with a St. Lawrence win.

Haspil was the lone Clarkson player with a multi-hit game in the second contest, going 2-for-3. Sofia Berryhill got the win for St. Lawrence, making the start and getting relieved by Layne Fritz in the middle innings. Berryhill returned late to gain the win, striking out eight in 5.1 innings. Lily Corrice got the start for the Knights but exited the game in the third for Fitzpatrick. The junior pitcher struck out seven in relief in 6.1 innings, giving up four hits and no walks, but was saddled with the loss.
