Knights Split with Oswego, Fitzpatrick Homers for Sixth Time in 2024

Potsdam, NY – Each team was granted a standout pitching performance on Tuesday afternoon, but the two pitchers never faced one another in the doubleheader between the Clarkson University Softball team and Oswego State, as the visiting Lakers took game one 8-1 but the Golden Knights rallied for an 8-0 win in five innings to salvage the split at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 9-11 overall while the Lakers moved to 5-13. Clarkson heads to Rochester this weekend, taking on University of Rochester on Friday in a doubleheader and facing Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday in another twin bill.

Lily Corrice had trouble with her control in the first inning, allowing Oswego to jump out to a 3-0 lead early, but it mattered little in the long run since the Knights could only score once against Fiona Higgins in the opener of the doubleheader. Grace DiPalma led off the game with a single and then the next three hitters reached on walks, forcing DiPalma home. Higgins helped her own cause with a two-run single making it 3-0. The Lakers added another run in the second when DiPalma drove home Kira Wright, who had led off the inning with a bunt single.

Corrice settled in after the first frame and didn't allow another free pass the rest of the game, while Clarkson came back with a run in the third without the benefit of a hit. Higgins had a bout of wildness to start that inning, as Isabel Haspil and Kaya Johnson each walked and Emma Sabourin was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Molly Pezzano hit a sac fly to left to score Haspil, making it 4-1. The Lakers picked up runs in the fifth and sixth innings, however, to put the game away. Ellie Mahoney dropped in a two-run double to right in the fifth and Mattison Phinney singled in another in the sixth while another run came around on a throwing error.

Higgins picked up the win, striking out 13 against four walks and three hits, living on the outer half of the plate and rarely coming inside to the Clarkson hitters. She also was 2-for-4 at the plate, while DiPalma went 3-for-4. Clarkson received hits from Pezzano, Zoey Kovach, and Elissa Uveino, but all came in the final three innings of the game.

Game two was a reversal of the first for the Knights, as they jumped on the Oswego starting pitcher for two runs in the first. Katy Aldous started with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice fly, allowing her to trot home on a single by Elizabeth Greco to center. Devin Fitzpatrick doubled and Bridget Kerwin reached on an error to load the bases, giving Zoey Kovach a chance with the bases loaded, and she singled down the left field line to score Clarkson's second run of the inning.

The Knights saw three different pitchers in the third and batted around, scoring five times. Greco opened with a walk and then came around on a blast off the bat of Devin Fitzpatrick, a hard shot down the left field line that stayed just inside the pole to make it 4-0. Bridget Kerwin and Zoey Kovach then smacked back-to-back doubles for a 5-0 Clarkson lead. A sac fly from Haspil scored Elissa Uveino and Katy Aldous doubled in Kaya Johnson for a 7-0 lead.

Clarkson had a chance to end it in the fourth with runners in scoring position, but the game would have to go to the bottom of the fifth before it concluded. Kaya Johnson singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt from Haspil. A hard grounder up the middle from Katy Aldous plated Johnson to end the game early.

Fitzpatrick allowed just a single hit in the fourth inning and also walked one, but struck out seven over five innings to earn her eighth win of the year. She was also dynamic at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and her sixth home run of the season. Aldous was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Zoey Kovach went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
