Plattsburgh, NY – The offense came late for the Clarkson University Softball team, and each time it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit, as the Golden Knights suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Plattsburgh State, 5-1 and 4-3, Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 11-23 overall while Plattsburgh edged forward to 11-21 on the season. Clarkson closes out the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Skidmore College.

In the opening contest, the Cardinals scored one in the first and four more in the second, but Plattsburgh's offense was muted the rest of the way. Gwen Noll started off the bottom of the first with a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and then came around on a double steal along with Dimitra Mouhtero. In the second Michelle DeFina singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, eventually coming home on a sacrifice fly from Kaitlin Smith. A couple of walks and run-scoring singles from Noll and Sara Isaacs made it 5-0.

Clarkson challenged in the fourth on a two-out double from Isabel Haspil, but it wasn't until the fifth that the Knights would get on the board. Genevieve Mucitelli singled, Katy Aldous followed with another single, and a two-out single from Zoey Kovach pushed across Clarkson's lone run. The Knights had another runner in scoring position in the seventh, but the game would end at 5-1.

Morgan Ormerod threw all seven innings for Plattsburgh, striking out nine against one walk and eight strikeouts. Jenna Totten took the loss for Clarkson, pitching 1.2 innings before Lily Corrice came on in relief for the next 2.1 innings. Devin Fitzpatrick struck out three over the final two innings for the Knights.

Plattsburgh would score only in the third inning of game two, but again it would be enough. Claire Palmer and Gwen Noll each singled and came home on a Sara Isaacs double to left-center. Megan Pillus and Kaitlin Smith would also drive in runs with singles in the inning.

Clarkson chipped away with a run in the top of the fourth. Emma Sabourin led off with a triple to right-center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bridget Kerwin. In the fifth, Lexi Rydelek singled and her pinch-runner scored on Genevieve Mucitelli's double to left. Mucitelli would later score on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.

Corrice was stuck with the loss, allowing four earned in 2.1 innings. Fitzpatrick again closed out the contest, giving up one hit over the final 3.2 innings. Sarah Milyko claimed the win, giving up three earned runs on five hits over seven frames.
