Rain Slows Down Doubledip, But Clarkson Drops Pair to Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – Scattered showers put Saturday's doubleheader in doubt on several occasions, and despite a two-hour delay in game two, the Clarkson University Softball team and Ithaca College finished off their twin bill with the Bombers gaining the sweep 9-2 and 6-5 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 11-17 overall and 3-7 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca edged up to 19-10 and 5-3. Clarkson faces St. John Fisher on Monday.

Clarkson ran into a buzzsaw in the first game as Anna Cornell was on her game early, striking out numerous hitters with only a handful of walks allowing Clarkson runners to reach base. Cornell finished with 16 strikeouts in six innings and allowed just two hits and two runs (one earned) in her final inning of work.

Meanwhile, Ithaca's offense put up enough support for Cornell to allow her to pitch confidently throughout the game. The Bombers picked up one run in the first when Jessie Lopez singled in Sela Scheinman who had led off with a walk and then stole second. In the fourth, Ithaca scored all it would end up needing as the team tallied three runs. Sydney Miranda led off with a single and stole second and was sent home on a hit from Hudson Hassler. Another single from Scheinman plated a run, and an error allowed the fourth run of the game to come home. In the fifth, a single from Kailey Winkelblech made it 5-0 and a sac fly by Belle de Oliveria scored another. In the sixth, Haley Petrucci's double to left put the score at 7-0.

Clarkson would get to Cornell in the bottom of the sixth. Emma Sabourin was hit by a pitch and Elizabeth Greco hit a clean single to right-center to end the no-hitter. Two batters later the shutout was gone when Zoey Kovach ripped a ball to left for an RBI double. Pinch-runner Elissa Uveino then came home from third base when a back-pick attempt was made but the throw slipped into the outfield. Ithaca would get the two runs back in the top of the seventh for the 9-2 win.

Game two went considerably longer than expected as rain and hail came down steadily in the third inning, forcing the teams to leave the field for close to two hours while the infield was worked on and eventually tarped. When the sun returned later, the game resumed around 6:00 pm. Ithaca had scored a run in the first before the delay, getting one in on Petrucci's single. Clarkson also scored once prior to the break when Katy Aldous had an infield single smothered by Scheinman, but her throw to first skipped away and sent pinch-runner Karyssa Parker home.

Once the game resumed, Clarkson had the bases loaded and Elizabeth Greco immediately doubled to left-center, plating a pair. Clarkson held that 3-1 lead until the sixth, when Ithaca regained the advantage scoring five unearned runs in the frame. Ava Rao doubled in two, Belle de Oliveira scored another with a hit, and Scheinman's double to left-center drove in a run, and she scored herself on an overthrow.

Clarkson would come back in the bottom half of the inning when Isabel Haspil sent a hard hit to the left-center gap, scoring both Bridget Kerwin and Molly Pezzano. However, Haspil was stranded at second. The Knights put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the game on a dropped line drive. Miranda misplayed the initial liner off the top of her glove, but quickly recovered, touching the bag at first and then getting the runner at second base on a tag.
