Knights Split Third Conference Doubleheader, Win Opener Against Union

Potsdam, NY – Big innings proved the difference for both teams on Friday afternoon, as the Clarkson University Softball team put up a six-spot in the second inning of game one to win 9-5 and Union plated nine in the third of game two for a 12-0 victory in a Liberty League split at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-15 on the season and 3-5 in Liberty League contests while Union saw its record go to 5-15 and 4-4. Clarkson will take on Ithaca College on Saturday, with a doubleheader slated for a 1:00 pm start.

In the first game, the Knights scored twice in their first at bat to take an early lead. Katy Aldous reached on an error to start the contest, then stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Devin Fitzpatrick singled to shallow left to score Aldous, putting the Knights up 1-0. Later in the frame, a bases loaded walk to Bridget Kerwin forced in another run, making it 2-0.

Although a Sam Rose RBI-single cut the margin to one in the top half of the second, Clarkson responded with six in the second to all but put the game away. Zoey Kovach singled in two, Elizabeth Greco plated a pair with a singe of her own, and Bridget Kerwin's single also scored another to make it 7-1. A bases loaded walk to Katy Aldous forced home another, putting the Knights up seven. In the bottom of the third, pinch-runner Karyssa Parker scored on a wild pick to give Clarkson a 9-1 lead, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Knights.

Union chipped away with a run in the fourth when Ellie Wintringer led off with a double and later scored on an error, and Tatum Perkin s drove in a run on a single in the fifth. The Garnet Chargers put a bit of a scare into the Knights in the seventh when they scored twice on RBI singles from Melody Kappel and Tatum Perkins, but that would be all as Clarkson won 9-5.

Game two started off with both offenses shaking off the cold in the first two innings, each going scoreless, though Union did load the bases in the first. The third saw Union send 13 hitters to the plate, resulting in nine runs. Perkins started things off with a sac fly to make it 1-0 and then RBI singles from Sam Rose and Autumn Duff made it 3-0. A bases loaded walk to Kappel forced in one, Riley Callahan's single scored another to put the tally at 5-0, but the big blow came on an RBI single from Wintringer that scored three, two coming via her hit and another coming around when the ball skipped away at the plate. Wintringer later scored on another error.

Unfortunately for the Knights, when they did put runners on base, they were eliminated on double plays. The third and fourth innings both saw Clarkson ground into double plays and in the fifth the Knights lined out for another double play, this one ending the game.
