Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Clarkson Drops 3-1 Decision to Alaska Fairbanks

Potsdam, NY – Although it was only three goals, Alaska-Fairbanks had a relative offensive break out against the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, scoring all of its goals in the final 24-plus minutes of play to claim a 3-1 victory against the Golden Knights on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their three-game win streak come to an end, falling to 5-3 overall, while Alaska improved to 2-5. The two teams will meet up again on Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.

WATCH POST GAME INTERVIEW WITH COACH HOULE

The Nanooks had scored just four goals in their previous five games and never had more than one in a contest in that stretch before capitalizing on their opportunities Friday night.

Clean looks were short for both teams in the opening period , as barely a third of Clarkson's shot attempts made it to the goaltender and only five total shots challenged Golden Knights' netminder Ethan Langenegger. It appeared as if Clarkson would get on the board late in the period thanks to a strong play from Ty Brassington that kept the puck in the offensive zone, but alas a goal that was scored a few seconds later by Garrett Dahm was called off due to interference.

Clarkson went scoreless on two power play opportunities in the first period, but broke the scoreless tie six minutes into the game when the team was once again skating up a player. Following a holding penalty, the Knights patiently passed the puck around to create their scoring chance. Jared Mangan dropped the puck off to Tristan Sarsland at the point and sent it back to Mangan at the left dot. Mangan then passed the puck down low to Dahm and a quick backhand pass went to Ryan Bottrill at the right circle. The defense shifted to that side and Bottrill located Mangan inside the left circle for a wide open shot and goal at 6:17.

POST GAME WITH JARED MANGAN

The Knights killed off a penalty to keep the score at 1-0, but shortly after that penalty ended, an icing call allowed Alaska to tie the game. Back in their own offensive zone, the Nanooks won the ensuing face off at the left circle, finding the stick of Luke LaMaster. He took a few strides in and slapped a shot on net, which was initially denied, but the rebound found the stick of Chase Dafoe, who deposited into the netting at 15:54.

A give-away in its own defensive end allowed Alaska to gain the lead early on in the third period on a seemingly innocuous clearing attempt. Behind the net, Clarkson had an extra skater in its end compared to the Nanooks, but a clearing pass off the left boards took a weird bounce, allowing Cade Ahrenholz to step in and pick up the loose puck. After a stride or two, Ahrenholz went five-hold to beat Langenegger and push the Nanooks up 2-1.

Late in the game, the Knights were whistled for too many men on the ice, but two calls against Alaska (tripping, hooking) created a power play and then a 5-on-3 for more than a minute. Despite some surgical precision on passes trying to find an opening, Nicholas Grabko was able to make the saves during the penalty kill and keep the Nanooks up by a goal.

POST GAME WITH KAELAN TAYLOR

That inability to find the tying goal on the 5-on-3 proved costly for the Knights a few moments later. When Clarkson chose to pull its goaltender for a 6-on-5 with the puck in the Alaska defensive end, the Nanooks were able to quickly win the faceoff and clear the puck into the neutral zone. From there, William Lawson-Body was able to win the race to the puck by reaching around with his stick and chipping it back into open ice, sending a pass back to Kyle Gaffney for the empty-net goal just 10 seconds after it was vacated.

Clarkson won the battle of shots on goal at 25-19 and also in total shots at 66-42. Neither team was particularly productive on the power play, as Clarkson was 1-for-6 and the Nanooks 0-for-5.
