Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Comeback Attempt Comes Up Short Versus RIT, 3-2

Potsdam, NY – Up a skater either on the power play or with the goalie pulled for the final four minutes of the game, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team came up just short in its comeback attempt against RIT, falling 3-2 in non-league action Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson saw its record evened at 1-1 while RIT also moved to 1-1. The Golden Knights will be at home next weekend as well, when the squad hosts Niagara University on Friday and then takes on Notre Dame on Saturday.

What was a fairly quiet and modestly-paced first period, one which totaled just 12 shots with each team putting six on goal, ended with some fireworks and changed the game for the final 40-plus minutes. Ellis Rickwood upended RIT goaltender Jakub Krbecek while taking a shortcut to get to the puck and once the stoppage came a melee began near the blue line. After the players were separated, the Knights lost Jack Sparks for the remainder of the game. The teams skated 4-on-4 for the remainder of the first period and also began the second period in the same manner.

RIT took advantage of the extra space on the ice with a goal in the first minute of the middle period. Dimitri Mikrogiannakis found Christian Catalano behind the net, and Catalano reversed his spot to drive towards the net. After a couple of moves, his shot bounced off a pad and the post and into the net to make it 1-0 at 0:56 in the second.

The Tigers wouldn't score again during the power play, but RIT did pick up another goal about five minutes after its first. Off a faceoff in their own defensive zone, the Tigers won a faceoff and quickly moved up ice on the right wing. Simon Isabelle skated around the back of the net looking for a wrap-around, but the puck found its way to Nick Cafarelli's stick in the right circle, where a slap shot deflected off a Clarkson defender's stick past Marcus Brannman.

Clarkson found itself on an extended power play after a couple of penalties were whistled on the Tigers, even giving the Knights a 5-on-3 for a little over a minute. It wasn't until it was back to a 5-on-4 power play that Clarkson would cash in, as the puck was worked around the edges, eventually finding the stick of Ryan Bottrill. After a few strides to close distance, Bottrill sent a wrist shot through traffic and over the glove of Krbecek at 15:33.

Despite a dominating third period in which the Knights outshot RIT 39-7 (13-5 in shots on goal), Clarkson actually fell further behind late in the frame. The Knights were looking to create a transition rush, but RIT's Andrew Tanner intercepted a rink-wide crossing pass. Tanner then skated into the offensive zone and wristed a shot through the glove side of Brannman to make it 3-1 at 15:10. With just over four minutes remaining, the Tigers were called for a penalty, giving the Knights an edge in skaters. About a minute later, Clarkson pulled Brannman as well to make it 6-4, getting a handful of solid chances before the power play expired. Still up a skater with the goalie out, the Knights eventually scored, but the tally came with just 2.3 seconds to go. Trey Taylor was awarded the goal after the puck ricocheted off a stick and past Krbecek, with the assist going to Garrett Dahm.

Clarkson finished with an overwhelming advantage in shots on goal, 35-18, with a similar differential in total shots (77-34). Clarkson was 1-for-6 on the power play, while RIT was scoreless in two tries. Brannman made 15 saves for the Knights, while Krbecek stopped 32 shots for RIT.
