Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Special Teams Shine in Clarkson's 4-2 Win Over Niagara

Potsdam, NY – Two power-play goals in the second period and a shorthanded goal in the final minute lifted the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Niagara University Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season while Niagara begins its campaign at 0-1. Clarkson hosts University of Notre Dame on Saturday evening to finish off its home weekend.

The final few minutes of the game were filled with action, as Niagara pulled its goalie for most of the final four-plus minutes of the contest. In that time frame, both teams scored a goal to go along with many near misses.

The shots finished relatively even after the opening period with just a handful of good chances for each team. Clarkson nearly got things going on the scoreboard six-plus minutes into the game, but Garret Dahm's shot clanged off the outside of the stick side post for Niagara's Pierce Charleson. With just a few minutes later in the period, Ethan Langenegger made a solid save off a shot from Glebs Prohorenkovs when his shot from the slot was turned aside. Clarkson finished with a narrow 8-7 edge in shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.

At the end of the first and start of the second, Clarkson was on the penalty kill and shortly after that ended, the Knights were called for another. The first penalty saw no shots on the goal for the Purple Eagles, but the second kept Langenegger busy as he made four saves. A few moments following the end of the second power play for Niagara, the Knights found themselves up a skater, except Clarkson was able to convert on its opportunity.

Clarkson won the faceoff in the Niagara defensive end and Ellis Rickwood dropped off a pass near the right point for Trey Taylor. He quickly wristed a shot into traffic and the attempt got just enough of Ryan Taylor's stick to ricochet past Charleson at 8:13 to make it 1-0.

Niagara put itself in a deep hole near the midway point of the second period. The Purple Eagles were called for a five-minute major, but a near-matching two-minute call on Clarkson made it 4-on-4. After that two minutes was eliminated, Niagara was called for an additional elbowing infraction, making it 5-on-3. Clarkson capitalized after a couple of near misses when a tic-tac-toe feed found Ellis Rickwood in the slot for a goal at 13:02, with assists going to Ayrton Martino and Trey Taylor.

It looked like Clarkson may end the second period with a two-goal advantage but a turnover in the neutral zone allowed for Niagara to pull within one just before intermission. Lars Rodne stuck his stick out near center ice to create a deflection back to Prohorenkovs, who then sent a pass up the right side to Shane Ott. Rodne then finished what he started off a 2-on-1 with Ott with less than 30 seconds remaining in the period.

A steal at the start of the third period got the Knights margin back up to two goals. Clarkson possessed the puck in its own offensive end for the first 40 seconds, though it appeared as if Niagara would clear the puck off a defensive change for the Knights. However, Jared Mangan stepped in front of the Purple Eagles attempt and skated to the opposite post through the slot, wristing a shot in just 45 seconds after the start of the frame.

With just under five minutes remaining in the game, the Knights were called for a penalty, and Niagara took advantage by pulling its goaltender to create a 6-on-4. Although Clarkson nearly picked up an empty-net goal with 3:20 remaining, it would be Niagara that would score while up the extra skaters. Luke Mylymok redirected a shot from Alex Murray as the power play seconds were dwindling, pulling the Purple Eagles back to within one with 2:33 remaining in the game.

Niagara again kept its net empty in trying to pick up the equalizer, though Clarkson had several close chances on the vacated spot. Ryan Richardson was the closest, hitting the post with 1:05 to go, allowing Niagara to stay within striking distance. Again the Purple Eagles would go up an additional skater when Clarkson was called for a hand pass off the faceoff in its own end. Despite the 6-on-4 disadvantage, however, Clarkson would get the insurance goal when Garrett Dahm cleared the puck from the left circle in the Knights' defensive end, and his shot found the back of the net with 26 seconds to go, making it 4-2.

Clarkson finished with a 27-22 advantage in shots and was 2-for-4 on the power play with a short-handed goal. Langenegger made 20 saves for the Knights and Charleson stopped 23 shots for Niagara.
