Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Last Second Shot Comes Up Short as Knights Fall to SLU, 73-72

Potsdam, NY – A layup from Trey Syroka with 2.7 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in a teetering second half as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team suffered a 73-72 defeat against St. Lawrence in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 10-7 overall and 4-6 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence edged forward to 12-4 and 8-2. Clarkson faces Vassar College and Bard College this weekend to close out an eight-game home stand.

The Golden Knights came out with an early answer to St. Lawrence's zone, hitting some long-range 3-pointers and finding forwards in the middle for some mid-range jumpers. Clarkson had a 14-5 lead in just three and a half minutes, forcing the Saints to take a quick timeout. St. Lawrence recovered with six straight points, only to see the Knights go on a 10-4 run, capped by a Jack Dalgety jumper. Again, St. Lawrence had an answer, rallying to tie the game at 26-26 when Trey Syroka made a layup at 4:57. Clarkson returned the margin to five, as Braeden Burns bullied his way in the paint for a short basket, and that would prove to be the gap at the half.

Burns was a one-man wrecking crew for Clarkson in the first half, scoring 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, while Syroka also was able to get inside for the Saints, scoring 12 points on 6-for-12 shooting, a percentage which looked much better when considering only shots from inside the 3-point arc (6-for-8).

In the second half, the Knights matched their largest lead of the game with nine after a Braeden Burns jumper, and then the margin expanded to 12 on a Jack Dalgety 3-pointer at 15:38. That was still the gap between the two teams when Dalgety made another 3-pointer four minutes later, but St. Lawrence slowly chipped away at Clarkson's lead over the next six minutes, eventually taking the lead on an Adam Dudzinski layup at 5:21. That was the end of any kind of streakiness for either team, however, as the teams traded blows, especially in the late moments. Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer at 2:33, only to see Troy McPherson hit one for St. Lawrence on the next possession. Clarkson went up by one at 1:13 with an inside look to Jack Dalgety, but Carter Storey hit a 3-pointer with 52.3 seconds left to put the Saints up by two. With 33.2 seconds to go, Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer, giving the Knights a one-point lead.

St. Lawrence used most of the clock before finally getting a shot off. Trey Syroka went through traffic and finished at the rim with one second left on the shot clock and 2.7 seconds to go in the game. Clarkson used its timeouts wisely to advance the ball, getting the ball up 25 feet in 1.1 seconds, and another 30 feet in the next 0.5 seconds, putting 1.2 on the clock for one final look. Ryan Miles-Ferguson had a hand in his face and had to double pump for a shot from the corner, but his attempt fell short, allowing the Saints to escape with a narrow win.

Braeden Burns scored 28 points to lead all scorers, while Jack Dalgety did much of his damage in the second half with 19 points, shooting 7-for-8 overall and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Miles-Ferguson ended up with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Five players finished in double figures for St. Lawrence, led by Syroka's 18 points. Dudzinski chipped in 12, McPherson had 11 points, Aidan Macaulay had 11 points and Andrew Cowan finished with 10 points as well as three blocked shots.
