Miles-Ferguson's Buzzer Beater Gives Knights OT Win Over Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Ryan Miles-Ferguson game-winning attempt was short on Tuesday, but the grad student's shot caught nothing but net as time expired in overtime on Friday night as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team outlasted Vassar College 74-73 in Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights got a much needed conference win and improved to 11-7 overall and 5-6 in the Liberty League, while Vassar fell to 6-12 and 4-7. Clarkson takes on Bard College on Saturday.

In the opening half, Clarkson struggled from the perimeter, making just two of its nine shots from outside the arc, but the Golden Knights excelled in the paint and on short jumpers, shooting 68.4% on two-point field goals (13-for-19). The Knights used their slight advantage in size to get to the rim and finish, including three straight layups early to give Clarkson a five-point lead. Vassar would come back to tie the game at 22-22, but Jack Dalgety made layups on consecutive trips to put the Knights back up. Down the stretch of the first half, it was Finn Cork and Braeden Burns who would carry the load, as the duo combined for 21 points in the opening 20 minutes, with Cork closing out the period on 5-for-7 shooting and 12 points.

Offense was stunted midway through the second half for both teams. Early on, Clarkson pushed its lead to 13 on a Miles-Ferguson 3-pointer, but Vassar slowly rallied over the next seven minutes and dropped the margin to one. The Knights held on late, when Jack Dalgety hit two big 3-pointers to push the lead to five with less than two minutes to go, only to see Shea Fitzgerald's two free throws tie the game with under a minute to go. The Brewers took the lead on a 3-pointer from Alex Walters late (64-63), only to see Braeden Burns hit the first of two free throws to tie the game. Off the rebound of the missed free throw, Fitzgerald got down the court for a decent look from about 28 feet, but Miles-Ferguson challenged the shot and it was off, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra session, Steve DeRegis seemingly had the Knights on their way to a win after he nailed two 3-pointers to give Clarkson a four-point advantage, but Vassar wouldn't go away. Nathan Denham hit a 3-pointer for the Brewers and Fitzgerald knocked down two free throws to put the Brewers up by one. Vassar missed four free throws in the final 25 seconds, allowing Clarkson a chance. After the second miss with about eight seconds to go, Miles-Ferguson raced down the court, but before he could get a shot off the ball was knocked out of bounds. With an in-bound play on the baseline with 2.1 seconds left, the ball was lofted into Miles-Ferguson at the left elbow near a few feet from the free throw line, where he took one dribble to his left and hit a 20-foot fade away as time expired.

Ryan Miles-Ferguson finished with 26 points, scoring 19 of his points after the half and shooting 11-for-20 overall. Finn Cork had a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds while Jack Dalgety scored 12. Braeden Burns also had 10 points and eight rebounds.

For Vassar, Nathan Denham produced a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Shea Fitzgerald and Luke Adams also tossed in 11 points for the Brewers.
