Knights Blanked Twice at Ithaca, 1-0 and 4-0

Ithaca, NY – Both Riley Page and Devin Fitzpatrick pitched well for the Clarkson University Softball team, but the Golden Knights' offense was stymied by Ithaca's pitchers and held scoreless for 16 frames as Ithaca claimed a Liberty League doubleheader sweep 1-0 and 4-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Clarkson dropped to 18-14 overall and 4-6 in the Liberty League, while the Bombers saw their record go to 18-9-1 and 6-4. The Golden Knights will face Union College on Friday afternoon in a key conference doubleheader.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Riley Page and Riley Piromalli exchanged zeroes on the scoreboard for the first eight innings before the Bombers finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth. Clarkson had a chance in the top of the first when Molly Pezzano singled and advanced to second on an error, but she was stranded there to end the inning. Ithaca had a few chances to score in the middle innings. Belle De Oliveira singled and stole second with one out but advanced no further in the third. In the fourth, Hudson Hassler led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Allison Dell'Orto, only to see Riley Page strike out the next three hitters to end the threat. In the fifth, Kailey Collins delivered a two-out double, but did not move up another base.

Each team had some chances in the later innings as well. Riley Page singled with two outs but never made it into scoring position for the Knights in the seventh, and in the bottom of the eighth, Ithaca had a leadoff double and put runners at second and third with a sacrifice fly, but a line out to left allowed Page to escape. In the ninth, Twaits led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt and moved to third on a hard hit single by Zoey Kovach that kept her from making a race for the plate. Piromalli got out of that jam with a fly out to center.

Ithaca picked up the lone run of the game in the bottom of the ninth. Madison Casale reached on a two-out single and advanced to second on an error. From there, Sela Scheinman provided the game-winning RBI with a double to the left-center gap, ending the contest 1-0.

Riley Page pitched well, allowing just an unearned run on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over 8.2 innings. Riley Piromalli gained the win for Ithaca, tossing nine scoreless innings while giving up three hits and two walks, fanning nine.

In game two, the Bombers doubled their scoring output from the first game in their first at bat, as Hudson Hassler and Suzie Williams each provided run-scoring hits for a 2-0 lead. Clarkson nearly knotted up the game in the top of the next inning when Elizabeth Greco walked, Katy Aldous singled, and Bridget Twaits singled to load the bases, but Ithaca starter Anna Cornell wiggled out of the jam with a strikeout. The Knights threatened again in the fourth when Bridget Kerwin walked with one out and Katy Aldous added a two-out single, but Bridget Twaits's flare was snagged by the right fielder to close out the frame.

Ithaca took advantage in the bottom of the fourth, picking up an insurance run in the middle innings. Tava Kasper led off with a double to left-center and then scored on Haley Petrucci's single to right to make the score 3-0. The Bombers drove in another in the fifth as Allison Dell'Orto's leadoff single and steal led to an RBI single from Suzie Williams.

Clarkson had one more chance in the top of the sixth, as Riley Page singled and moved to third on a Devin Fitzpatrick double to center, but a strikeout, fly out to right, and nifty play in the hole by the Ithaca shortstop closed out the threat.

Devin Fitzpatrick took the loss for the Knights, going six innings and allowing eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Anna Cornell tossed the shutout for the Bombers, giving up seven hits and two walks with nine whiffs.
