Knights Drop Pair at Union, 2-1 and 8-2

Schenectady, NY – A third straight pitchers' duel and a rough third inning in game two saw the Clarkson University Softball team on the short end of Friday's doubleheader at Union College, as the Golden Knights suffered a second straight conference sweep in two days, falling to the Dutchwomen 2-1 and 8-2.

The Golden Knights dropped to 18-16 on the season and 4-8 in the Liberty League, while Union edged up to 13-15 and 5-5. Clarkson closes out the conference season next weekend at home against Skidmore College, where the team likely will need to win both to claim the last spot in the conference tournament.

In the opener, all of the runs were scored in the first two innings of a tight 2-1 contest. The Knights got on the board first in the opening frame as Molly Pezzano walked and was forced out on an Emma Sabourin fielder's choice. Sabourin then moved up to second on a wild pitch and scored on Zoey Kovach's single through the right side for a 1-0 lead. Union countered in the bottom half of the frame when Karson Saunders walked and stole second, scoring on the single from Olivia Valery. In the bottom half of the second, the Dutchwomen picked up another run as Melody Kappel singled and moved up two more bases on wild pitches, trotting home easily on the single by Amanda Granato.

Clarkson had its chances for extra runs in the game, but the Knights were doubled up on an attempted sac fly in the second, and in the fourth a lineout turned into another double play. In the sixth, Emma Sabourin was on second after a single and wild pitch but was stranded, and in the seventh Bridget Kerwin was stranded at second with one out as well.

Kovach, Kerwin, and Elizabeth Greco each had two hits in the first contest. Riley Page took the loss, going 5.2 innings with six strikeouts against four walks and seven hits.

Game two saw a five-run third turn the tide of the game. Clarkson held the lead 2-1 through two and a half innings after an error allowed Emma Sabourin to score in the first and an Elizabeth Greco single sent Kovach in, but Union notched five runs on five hits in the third. Valery doubled home the tying run, Nahnny Sobetzko singled in a pair, and Tatum Perkins tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch herself to put the tally at 6-2. In the fourth, the Dutchwomen picked up two insurance runs with an RBI single and a wild pitch sending in another.

Devin Fitzpatrick took the loss in game two, striking out eight in six innings and allowing 11 hits and five earned runs. Sabourin had three hits in the second contest, while Greco, Kovach, and Bridget Twaits each recorded two hits.
