Clarkson Bats Produce 31 Hits and Score 26 in Doubleheader Sweep of SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – Scoring three or more runs in an inning six different times, the Clarkson University Softball team put up plenty of crooked numbers on the scoreboard as the Golden Knights swept a doubleheader from SUNY Canton 10-2 and 16-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 18-12 on the year and SUNY Canton fell to 2-22. Clarkson is scheduled to face Ithaca College and Union College in conference games this weekend.

In the first contest, the Knights put up three runs quickly in their first at bat. Emma Sabourin doubled to center to plate a pair as Bridget Twaits and Molly Pezzano had opened the game with back-to-back hits. Riley Page later singled up the middle to score another run. In the second, Sabourin doubled again to pick up her third RBI of the day, and in the fourth, Zoey Kovach delivered a two-run double and scored on a dropped fly ball in the outfield to give the Knights a 7-0 edge.

Canton did pick up runs in both the fifth and sixth, with an error allowing the first to score in the fifth and a bases loaded walk forced in the Kangaroos second run in the sixth. However, in the bottom half of the sixth the Knights put the game away. Bridget Kerwin drew a bases loaded walk to push a run across, Elizabeth Greco singled in a run, and Bridget Twaits was hit by a pitch to force home the game-ending run.

Twaits finished game one with a 4-for-4 effort and two runs scored, Sabourin was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three more driven in, Kovach went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, and Elizabeth Greco also was 2-for-3. Riley Page picked up the win, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out six.

Game two was more of the same, though the Roos did score in the top of the first to briefly take the lead. A throwing error on an attempted force out at second base allowed an unearned run to score, but the Knights ended any ideas of an upset very quickly. In the bottom of the first, Devin Fitzpatrick drilled a three-run double and Elizabeth Greco traded places with Fitzpatrick on a double to make it 4-1. Clarkson then tallied nine in the second inning to put the game away. Kovach singled in a run and Kerwin doubled in a pair to make it 7-1. Becky Kennedy-Titsworth drove in another run, and Kerwin scored on a wild pitch to put the tally at 9-1. Katy Aldous, Sabourin, Kovach, and Fitzpatrick each contributed with RBI singles to make it 13-1.

In the top of the third, Canton gained another run on a sacrifice fly from Priscilla Soule, but again the Knights had an answer. Kaya Johnson doubled in a run, Molly Pezzano picked up an RBI when she reached on an error and Katy Aldous scored for third base, and Elissa Uveino delivered and RBI single for the Knights' final run.

Kovach ended up 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, Sabourin scored three and was 2-for-2, and Fitzpatrick drove in four and was 2-for-3 at the dish. Elizabeth Greco and Katy Aldous also each added two hits in the game. Fitzpatrick gained the win, striking out five and allowing only one earned run in three innings. Rylee Broadwell tossed the final two innings, striking out three.
