Knights Drop 92-90 Decision in Overtime to Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Overtime was required in the return to Liberty League play on Friday, as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team came up just short in the extra minutes to Vassar College, with the Golden Knights falling 92-90 at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell below .500 at 5-6 overall and moved to the even mark in conference games at 2-2, while Vassar moved to 7-4 and 3-1. Clarkson takes on Bard College at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening half, the two teams jostled back-and-forth, exchanging ties and the lead on numerous occasions until Clarkson finally gained a big of a foothold late in the half. Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit his second 3-pointer at the 4:12 mark to put the Golden Knights up by nine (40-31), but Clarkson would not score again for the remainder of the half, allowing the Brewers to score 10 unanswered points and take a one-point advantage into the locker room at the break.

Vassar continued its momentum at the start of the second, building a 10-point lead (55-45) around the 15-minute mark, but Clarkson would not let the game get away, pulling to within two when Matteo Sinon converted in the lane with eight minutes remaining. The Knights fell behind by as many as eight shortly thereafter, only to see the game get tied in the final minute when Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer. Two free throws briefly put Vassar back up, but a lay in from Blake Gearhart in the waning seconds tied the game and sent the contest to overtime.

In the extra session, Vassar would never trail, but the Brewers never owned a comfortable lead either. The Brewers went up by five twice in overtime, and Clarkson had an answer each time, tying the game with under 15 seconds to go on an inside make from Finn Cork. Jack Rothenberg converted the biggest two points among his 24 in the game with three seconds to go, and Clarkson's last effort resulted in a turnover, as Vassar came away with the win.

Ryan Miles-Ferguson led all scorers with 26 points and Garret Delaney came off the bench to score 20 points and also add eight rebounds. Other reserves to score in double figures were Finn Cork, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Matteo Sinon, who added 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting.

For Vassar, Jack Rothenberg produced 24 points on 10-for-15 shooting while also snagging nine rebounds, and Zach Johnson was within one assist of a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists.
