Knights Sweep Bard in Liberty League Opener

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – The opening 10 matches of 2022 were all preparation for the conference season for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, and the strategy seems to have worked as the Golden Knights opened up the Liberty League slate with a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-11, 25-8) over Bard College on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Raptors dropped to 3-8 and 0-1. Clarkson will face Vassar College on Saturday afternoon.

Bard was able to stick with the Golden Knights in the early going of the first set as Clarkson struggled with unforced errors, giving the Raptors five of their first eight points on attack or service errors. The two teams were tied on eight occasions in the early going, but Clarkson went on a 4-0 run thanks to a pair of kills from Olivia Freer to get some breathing room and force the Raptors to take a timeout. After the break, Clarkson continued its run with three more points, including another kill from Freer and an ace from Kristin Werdine. Up by eight late in the set, an ace from Abigail Spector closed out the game. Clarkson's offense was a bit off in the game with seven unforced attack errors, but the Knights nearly made up for it at the service line with five aces.

In the second set, Clarkson continued its steady separation that it showed in the last half of the first set, building its lead consistently until the midway point when the Knights went on a 6-1 run to turn a five-point advantage into a double-figure lead thanks to back-to-back aces from Ashley Currier and then another from Isabelle Crow. Although the margin briefly went back to single figures, Clarkson again asserted itself from the service line with Spector dropping in two aces to close out the set and give the Knights a 14-point win. Clarkson collected eight aces and hit .385 (13-3-26) in the second set.

The third set saw Clarkson get two aces from Emma Baxter and kills from four different players in the opening 10 points of the game, as the Knights jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The game was never in doubt, as Clarkson cruised to a lopsided win thanks to more excellence from the service line and some miscues on the attack by Bard.

The Golden Knights finished with a 300-plus point edge in hitting percentage, as the team overcame a slow start to finish at .282 overall, while the Clarkson defense held Bard to -.039. The Knights also had a 17-4 edge in aces.

Olivia Freer and Kristin Werdine tied for the team lead with nine kills, as Freer hit .412 in the match (9-2-17) and Werdine struck for .273 (9-3-22). Crow ran the offense with 24 assists while also delivering three kills in just five attempts. Emma Baxter had a team-best 11 digs, but also contributed five assists and five aces, while Werdine added four aces and Spector contributed three aces. For Bard, Ryan Lum had eight digs, five kills and a pair of aces.
