Knights Showcase Excellence from Service Line with 21 Aces In Win Over Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – For the first time under coach Carol LaMarche, the Clarkson University Volleyball team surpassed 20 aces in a match, as the Golden Knights recorded 21 service aces in a four-set win over Vassar College (25-14, 17-25, 25-8, 25-10) on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League while Vassar dropped to 1-9 and 1-1. Clarkson looks to remain unbeaten in conference play when it takes on St. Lawrence University next Thursday in Canton.

The only hiccup in Clarkson's match against the Brewers on Saturday came during the second set, when the Knights had 11 attack errors, which just proved too much to overcome. In the first, third, and fourth sets, however, the Green and Gold cruised, hitting a robust .367 (36-7-79) in those wins with 18 aces. Clarkson's offense hummed along in the third set, attacking at a rate of .400 (14-2-30), while the Knights' service game was at its peak in the fourth set where the team had eight aces.

Saturday's biggest threat from the service line was senior setter Isabelle Crow, as she notched eight aces to go along with her 35 assists. Kristin Werdine, Ashley Currier, and Abigail Spector each tossed in three aces, and both Alexandra Bergantz and Emma Baxter picked up two aces apiece. Werdine also struck for 12 kills and 12 digs, while Baxter added 19 digs and five assists. Leading the team's offense was sophomore middle Allyson Treichel, as she had a match-best 15 kills on just 31 attempts with only four errors.

For Vassar, Hailey Hayes picked up nine kills and Rebecca Gutierrez added seven kills and three aces. Melia Voss posted 24 assists and seven digs and Maya Levine led the squad with 12 digs.
