Clermont, FL – Senior pitcher Olivia Zoeller allowe just one hit and struck out 13 in six innings as the Clarkson University Softball team earned a split in its third day of games with a 4-1 win over Smith College and an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday morning at Legends Way Ballfields.

The Golden Knights move to 1-5 on the season and will close out their Florida trip with games against Buffalo State and Tufts University on Saturday.

In the opener, Clarkson got on the scoreboard early with runs in the bottom of the second as Kayla Robert led off with a triple and came home on a Maddie Brink single. Katy Aldous then came on to pinch-run for Brink, stealing second, where Tatum Morris took over as pinch-runner, later scoring to put the Knights up 2-0.

Zoeller was in control from the beginning, striking out 10 of the first 12 hitters she faced. Smith got on the board in the fifth when Megan Osmond double and came around on a throwing error. Clarkson picked up runs in the fifth and sixth, though, as Sam Short scored on a hit from Sarah Vaccaro in the fifth frame and Becky Kennedy-Titsworth plated Kayla Robert with a single in the sixth.

Zoeller finished with 13 strikeouts and no walks with one hit allowed in six frames for her first win of the season, while Devin Fitzpatrick came on to pitch a scoreless seventh with one strikeout to earn the save. Both Kayla Robert and Maddie Brink went 2-for-3.

In game two, Eau Claire rode the arm of Jacie Schultz, who allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings while striking out four. The Blugolds scored one in the second on an RBI groundout from Haley Lamberson and then picked up three in the fourth when Alli Schoenrock singled in a run on a bunt, Salena Jeanson drove one in on a sacrifice fly, and Chloe Garofalo singled in a run.

The game ended via run-rule in the fifth as the Blugolds scored four more in the fifth. Schoenrock drove in one with a sac fly, a double steal allowed another run to score, and Jeanson ended the game with a two-run double.
