Hulbert Eclipses 1000 in Clarkson's 92-85 Victory Over Union

Potsdam, NY – In a battle of top-scoring starters, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team was able to edge Union College, 92-85, behind 20-point efforts from Chris Hulbert and Ryan Miles Ferguson Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-18 on the season and 3-14 in conference games while Union took a hit to its playoff hopes, falling to 11-12 and 8-9. Clarkson will close out the regular season on Saturday against Skidmore College.

The Green and Gold jumped out to an early 9-0 lead as the game opened on a four-point play from Joe Lucas. Union settled in and slowly chipped away at the deficit as Justin Regis began consistently knocking down 3-pointers. Regis hit four 3-pointers in a stretch of just two minutes to tie the contest and Union briefly took the lead on a short jumper from Brian Noone at the 6:10 mark. However, the Knights scored seven straight to regain the advantage. A few minutes later Connor Cepiel hit a 3-pointer to tie the contest, but the Knights went on an 8-2 run to end the half, punctuated by two layups from Ryan Miles-Ferguson in the final minute.

Regis had 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the first half, while Joe Lucas tossed in 10 points for the Knights, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

At the start of the second half, Union got within two at the 17:25 mark, but the Knights extended their lead back to four on the ensuing possession as Chris Hulbert hit a jumper to record his 1000th career point, becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach the figure. Hulbert was far from finished as the senior kept on pouring in points in the second half. All of them were needed as Union quietly took the lead on a handful of occasions early in the second half. Union led 60-58 at the 14:08 mark, but Hulbert made two shots in the paint and then buried a 3-pointer at the 9:58 mark, capping off a 13-2 run. Union chipped away and was back within one on a basket from Noone at 5:09 and then the game was tied on yet another 3-pointer from Justin Regis at 4:35. Clarkson took over for the remainder of the game, however, as Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers to put the Knights up by seven with just under three minutes remaining. From that point on, the Knights were able to keep the Dutchmen at a safe distance with free throws down the stretch.

Hulbert finished with 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting and Miles-Ferguson added 21 points by going 8-for-16 from the field. Miles-Ferguson also contributed six rebounds, five assists, and four steals in the game. Blake Gearhart also scored 19, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor, and Joe Lucas finished with 10 points.

For Union, three players finished with 20-plus points. Regis scored 22 on 7-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc, and Mike Manley also made seven 3-pointers to score 21. Noone did most of his damage inside the 3-point line, scoring 20 on 8-for-13 shooting.
