First Game in Florida Sees Clarkson Come Up Short Versus Ohio Northern

Naples, FL – Senior guards Blake Gearhart and Ryan Miles-Ferguson each scored 18 points, but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team came up short against Ohio Northern, 70-65, in the team's first game of its holiday trip to Florida.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-4 on the season while Ohio Northern edge forward to 5-5. Clarkson will face Wisconsin-Superior at 7:00 pm on Friday evening to close out its southern trip.

Both teams had their offensive hiccups in the early going. Clarkson had an early lead on a layup from Blake Gearhart, but the Knights struggled for a stretch with several turnovers as the Polar Bears caused some Clarkson miscues with tipped passes. Near the midway point of the half, Gearhart hit a 3-pointer near the top of the key to break the scoreless stretch, and Frankie Rainville hit a pair of 3-pointers to put the Knights up 16-14 with 8:35 remaining. Clarkson built its lead to as many as five as Ohio Northern began to have its troubles on offense, with the Polar Bears enduring a six-minute stretch without a basket. The Bears did regain the lead with an 8-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer off an offensive rebound, but the Knights closed out the half with a 5-0 run, including a 3-pointer from Garret Delaney with 24 seconds left in the half.

Out of the break, the Knights came out cold, and the Polar Bears took advantage, turning a two-point halftime deficit into an eight-point lead (36-28). Although Clarkson shrugged off its issues briefly when Garret Delaney hit a 3-pointer at 15:50, the Knights still trailed by eight until Ryan Miles-Ferguson and Delaney hit back-to-back 3-pointers to force Ohio Northern to take a timeout. The break didn't stop Clarkson's strong effort on the defensive end, as the Knights forced a turnover and tied the game on a Finn Cork layup with a little over 11 minutes to play.

Clarkson found itself on the short end of the whistles in the second half, as Ohio Northern was shooting in the bonus by the midway point of the second half, and with second chances was able to jump back ahead by six (47-41). The Knights countered with quickness on the interior, tying the game for the second time in the half when Gearhart blew past his defender off a jab step for an easy layup at 6:28, forcing another timeout by the Polar Bears.

Clarkson gained the lead on its next possession when Ryan Miles-Ferguson was fouled on a step-back 3-pointer, sinking all three of his free throws to give the Knights their first lead since the early going of the second half. However, the foul trouble continued to haunt the Knights, as what appeared to be an over the back called was reversed to give Ohio Northern free throws, allowing the Polar Bears to jump back on top (53-52) with 4:25 to go. Ohio Northern continued to get second chances on offensive rebounds, and took advantage, holding on to its lead and edging up to four on a 3-pointer at the 1:40 mark. Although Clarkson briefly cut the deficit to one possession, including just a one-point margin with six seconds left after a make from Miles-Ferguson, Ohio Northern was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Gearhart finished with 18 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the floor, while Miles-Ferguson scored his 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field and a 7-for-10 effort from the free throw line. Miles-Ferguson also added six rebounds and four assists. Frankie Rainville chipped in 13 points, and Garret Delaney added 12 points, going 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

For Ohio Northern, Landen Long tossed in 25 points, shooting 6-for-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while CJ Napier produced a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds.
