Strong Start Pushes Knights Past Potsdam, 77-68

Potsdam, NY – Four players finished in double figures, as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team used a balanced attack to pick up its second straight win over a North Country opponent, downing crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam 77-68 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 2-2 and are now off until next weekend when the team opens Liberty League play against Skidmore College and Union College. SUNY Potsdam fell to 1-4.

The Bears opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers from Sillah Ahamadou and Kelly Parker, but Clarkson claimed the lead on a basket-and-one by Ryan Miles Ferguson a few minutes later and the Knights never trailed again. Clarkson went on a 13-0 run in a stretch of just three minutes as Matteo Sinon started the rush with a 3-pointer and ended with another basket, with a pair of Garret Delaney 3-pointers mixed in. Another 3-pointer from Delaney at the 7:46 mark put Clarkson up by 20 (34-14). The Knights then went cold as Potsdam crawled back to within 10, but the Green and Gold ended with another run to push the margin back to 19 at the break.

Clarkson shot 19-for-37 from the floor and 9-for-19 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half.

In the second half, Clarkson's hot shooting declined as Potsdam trimmed the margin down the stretch. The Knights led by as many as 22 points (69-47) with just under nine minutes to go after an Aydin Kocak 3-pointer, but the Bears played strong defense with full-court pressure to force the Knights into some costly mistakes. Clarkson's last basket of the game came at the 6:29 mark on a make from Blake Gearhart, the Bears pulled to within six with just a little over a minute to go. However, Clarkson was able to convert six free throws in the waning moments to claim a nine-point win.

Blake Gearhart scored a team-best 17 points, shooting 7-for-11 overall and 3-for-3 from the arc, to go along with eight rebounds. Garret Delaney tossed in 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting with a pair of free throws, and Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored 13 points to go along with four boards and three assists. Finn Cork also scored 10 points off the bench, going 5-for-8 from the floor.

For Potsdam, Ahamadou Sillah had a game-high 28 points, shooting 11-for-19 from the field, and also matched his teammate Brandon Segar, Jr. with 13 rebounds. Isaac Oduro, Jr., also scored 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting. The Bears made just three 3-pointers on 20 attempts in the game.
