Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Knights Fall Late to Skidmore, 76-70

Potsdam, NY – Senior Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored 23 points, but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team went quiet down the stretch and Skidmore College took advantage, with the Thoroughbreds taking a 76-70 win away from Alumni Gymnasium on Friday night.

The Golden Knights dipped back below .500 to 2-3 and 0-1 in conference games, while Skidmore evened its mark at 3-3 and 1-1. Clarkson looks to get back on track against Union College on Saturday afternoon.

For the first 33 minutes of Friday's contest, the two teams exchanged runs and leads with regularity as neither could gain much of a foothold against the other. Clarkson jumped out to a 12-6 lead after a Garret Delaney 3-pointer at 14:45, only to see Skidmore rattle off 10 straight points in the next three minutes. The Knights then regained the advantage with some makes from Delaney, but the two teams jostled back and forth for the remainder of the half. Skidmore did take a four-point lead twice late in the half, including the last tallies of the half on free throws from Mark Engel.

After falling behind by a few more points at the start of the second, Clarkson went on an 8-0 run with long-range makes from Jack Dalgety and Ryan Miles-Ferguson, and Clarkson either led or never trailed by more than a point for an extended stretch in the second half. After falling behind by two with less than eight minutes to go, Dalgety hit another 3-pointer at the 6:55 mark to put the Knights up by one (61-60). That make, though, would be the last for close to six minutes for Clarkson, and Skidmore went to the interior, getting numerous layups from the Thoroughbreds big men and guards to build a 12-point lead (73-61). During that 13-0 run by Skidmore, the Knights went 0-for-6 from the field with three turnovers before a Blake Gearhart make finally halted the scoreless stretch. Although the Knights did get back within five, their charge was too late and Skidmore closed out the game up by six.

Miles-Ferguson scored 23 points, finishing in double figures for the fifth straight game and topping 20 for the second time on the year, and he shot 10-for-16 from the floor. Blake Gearhart scored a season-best 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting and also added four rebounds and three assists. Finn Cork led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.

For Skidmore, Tautvydas Kupstas scored 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting while also chipping in five rebounds, and Riley Greene added 19 points, six boards and three assists. The Thoroughbreds nearly had two bigs earn double-doubles as Alexei Downie had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Bobby Stratts finished with eight points and 10 boards.
