Hulbert Scores 23 in Loss to Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Senior Chris Hulbert made seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team dropped an 84-76 Liberty League decision to Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-12 overall and 2-8 in the league while Vassar pushed its mark to 13-5 and 9-3. Clarkson will play a makeup game on Tuesday evening at Bard College.

Vassar led in the early going, but Clarkson started making some 3-pointers around the midway point of the first half. The Knights got the lead on a Jack Dalgety 3-pointer and then extended the lead to as many as 11 points when Chris Hulbert made three 3-pointers in a stretch of less than seven minutes. Vassar got within six a few minutes later but Dalgety made another 3-pointer to push the gap to nine (33-24) with 3:45 left. That was the last make of the half for the Knights, though, and the Brewers took advantage with a 9-1 run over the final three minutes.

Blake Gearhart scored 12 in the first half as the Knights made seven 3-pointers in the first half. Vassar had 10 players score in the opening 20 minutes, including nine making at least one basket.

Ethan Ellis hit a 3-pointer on Vassar's first possession of the second half, and the Brewers would never trail again. Clarkson did tie the game twice, but a small run was capped off by a Kevin McAuliffe 3-pointer to put Vassar up by seven. About four minutes later, a 3-pointer from Alan Cedeno extended the Vassar advantage to 13 points with 12 minutes remaining, but Clarkson began to chip away over the next few minutes and reduced the contest to a two-possession game. A pair of free throws at the 5:32 mark from Joe Lucas trimmed the margin to three and a few minutes later a Chris Hulbert fade away jumper in the lane made the score 75-73, but that was as close as Clarkson would get in the final minutes. Hulbert hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to keep things interesting, only to see a baseball pass fast-break layup by Ethan Ellis put the game away.

Hulbert scored 23 points, shooting 8-for-16 overall and 7-for-12 from the 3-point arc. Blake Gearhart was solid all-around with 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds and Joe Lucas tossed in 10 points.

For Vassar, Zach Johnson had a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor. Ethan Ellis and Kevin McAuliffe each scored 14 points and Jack Rothenberg produced 11 points, seven boards, and five assists.
