CU Softball Preview - at Plattsburgh State (4/14)

Fresh off a strong start in league play that saw the team play four doubleheaders in six days, the Clarkson University Softball team returns to non-league action on Wednesday when the squad takes on Plattsburgh State.

The Series: Although the schedule has included Plattsburgh on several occasions, weather or makeups have bumped the Cardinals off the slate in a few years since Clarkson started playing games in 2014. The Golden Knights are 1-3 all-time against Plattsburgh, losing a pair of one-run games in 2016 and splitting the doubleheader in 2017.

Key Stats for Clarkson (11-5): Olivia Zoeller garnered Liberty League Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this year on Monday, and with good reason. Zoeller struck out 49 over the course of 29 innings last week, going 5-0. Overall, Zoeller leads the Liberty League in virtually every category, including ERA (0.27), wins (8), shutouts (4), complete games (7), strikeouts (87), and opponents' batting average (.139). In the batter's box, Kayla Robert is nearly matching Zoeller's dominance, hitting .608/.649/.922 with league best totals of 31 hits and 22 runs batted in. Sophomore Bridget Twaits is batting .500/.553/.529 with a team best eight stolen bases and Maddie Brinks is contributing to the offense at .431/.464/.627.

Key Stats for Plattsburgh State (3-5): The Cardinals had the misfortune of missing the entirety of the 2020 season as the team did not get a single game in before its campaign was cancelled, but Plattsburgh is still getting a solid mix of contributions from upperclassmen and players with little collegiate experience. Senior Alexandra Clifford is hitting .375/.385/.667 with a team-best 10 runs batted in, while sophomore Rebecca Diller has two home runs and is 11-for-25 for a .440/.444/.760 slash line. Julia Golino and Kristina Maggiacomo are splitting the pitching duties, with Golino posting a 4.57 earned run average and a 1.96 WHIP and Maggiacomo matching Golino's WHIP figure with a 5.50 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 28 innings.
