Knights Fall 3-1 to RPI to Open New Year

A long layoff and a hard-working effort by Rensselaer proved to be to much for Clarkson University to overcome in its first action of the New Year as the Engineers handed the Green and Gold a 3-1 defeat in ECAC Hockey action before 2,468 fans at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

Ranked 4/6th in the national polls entering the weekend, the Golden Knights saw their six-game overall unbeaten streak (5-0-1) come end along with an eight-game winning streak over RPI.

Clarkson, which suffered its first loss since November 15, goes to 12-4-2 overall and to 6-2 in ECAC Hockey play. The Knights will look to get back on track when they host Union on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

The Knights held the advantage in shots, 33-26, after 60 minutes, but it was RPI, which controlled play through much of the game. Clarkson's power play, which was red hot to close out 2019, going 7-15 (46.6%) in the previous three games before the break, stalled in the first game of 2020. The Knights went 0-7 on the power play against the Engineers, including a nearly full two minute, two-man advantage midway through the first period.


Just 83 seconds in, Rensselaer scored on a shot by Simon Kjellberg that deflected in past Clarkson goaltender Frank Marotte (Lonqueuil, QUE). The visitors held a 12-9 advantage in shots through the first 20 minutes.

After a scoreless second period in which both teams recorded eight shots, RPI added its second goal at 9:32 of the third when Ture Linden fired in a quick wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle.

The Knights finally got on the scoreboard when freshman Mathieu Gosselin (Quebec City, QUE) knocked in a shot in front off assists from sophomore linemates Chris Klack (Georgetown, ONT) and Anthony Callin (Middleton, WI) at 14:32.

Clarkson, which outshot RPI 16-6 in the third, continued to pressure for the tying goal, but the Engineers sealed their first win in the series since January 2017 with an empty-net score by Will Reilly with 1:47 left in regulation.

Marotte finished with 23 saves, while Linden Marshall posted 32 stops to pick up the road victory.
