Knights Earn 2-0 Shutout Over Union

Behind a solid effort through 60 minutes, a couple of timely goals and stingy defensive play, backstopped by Frank Marotte (Longueuil, QUE), Clarkson returned to the win column with a 2-0 ECAC Hockey victory over Union before 2,463 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

Clarkson, which lost for the first time since mid-November with Friday's 3-1 setback to Rensselaer, improves to 13-4-2 overall and to 7-2 in ECAC Hockey play. The Golden Knights, who entered the weekend ranked 4/6th in the national polls, host Princeton and Quinnipiac next weekend at Cheel to close out a four-game home stand to begin the New Year.

Clarkson outshot Union (6-14-1, 4-6) 26-19. Marotte, a graduate transfer from Robert Morris, posted seven first-period saves, five stops in the middle frame and seven more over the final 20 minutes to record his second shutout with the Green and Gold and 10th career whitewash.

All the scoring took place in the first period.

Senior Haralds Egle (Liepaia, Latvia) connected for his team-high eighth goal of the season. Skating on a 5-on-3 power play. Egle took a pass from junior Zach Tsekos (Montreal, QUE) at the right circle and fired in a low wrist shot at 9:07 for the only goal the Knights would need. Junior defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) also assisted.

With time winding down in the opening stanza, McCarthy made it 2-0 when his shot from the blueline found its way through traffic in front and into the back of the Union net at 19:49 for his sixth goal of the season and first tally of the year that did not come on the power play. Sophomores Josh Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) and Chris Klack (Georgetown, ONT) assisted.

Clarkson controlled play in the second period, outshooting the Dutchmen 15-5. Union held a slight 7-6 shot advantage in the third frame.

The Knights went 1-of-4 on the power play and killed off all six of Union's man-advantage opportunities.
