CU Volleyball Preview - at Cal Lu Fornia Tournament (9/7-8)

Traveling some 2800 miles, the Clarkson University Volleyball team heads to Thousand Oaks, California this weekend to compete in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, hosted by national power California Lutheran.

The Golden Knights will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor and Whittier on Friday evening and then face Pomona-Pitzer and host Cal Lutheran on Saturday night.

The Series: Facing teams from, in some cases, several time zones away, the Golden Knights will not have much in the way of experience against any of the teams. It will be the first meeting ever for Clarkson against both Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) and Pomona-Pitzer (CA), though the Green and Gold have faced both Whittier and Cal Lutheran before. Clarkson beat Whittier out in California in September 2013 and also faced Cal Lutheran in 2013, losing to the Regals in four sets in the NCAA National Quarterfinals.

Key Stats for Clarkson (2-1): Junior middle hitter Rachel Reusch enjoyed a big opening weekend, battering opponents' to the tune of a .566 hitting percentage (48-5-76) to go along with 4.00 kills per set, 0.83 blocks per set and .33 aces per set. Junior libero Kate Isaksen was not as busy as the last two years due to some shorter rallies, but she still contributed 5.33 digs per set during the first matches of the year. Junior Maddie Bredehoeft also produced all over the court last weekend, recording numbers of 2.50 kills, 0.50 aces, and 3.33 digs per set as well as a .242 hitting percentage.

Key Stats for California Lutheran (4-0): Unranked at the start of the season, Cal Lutheran jumped all the way up to number 11 in the AVCA Coaches' Poll after beating both sixth-ranked Johnson & Wales and 13th-ranked Carthage in four sets. No stranger to the polls, the Regals won the National Championship in 2015 and finished as runners-up in 2013. Four players are averaging better than two kills per set, led by Amanda Roberts (3.07 kps, 2.71 dps). Freshman Maci Haddad is hitting .309 with a block per set and Paris Dosch is hitting .354 with 2.62 kills per set. Steph Rolfson (8.38 aps) and Jennifer Kent (4.91 aps) help run a diverse offense.

Key Stats for Mary Hardin-Baylor (2-0): The Crusaders had a short weekend to open the season, playing just two matches, but they swept both Heidelberg and Wisconsin-Superior, hitting .294 as a team in six sets. Corinne Novak led the team with 26 kills, recording 4.33 per set with a .288 hitting percentage. Cory Jo Martin (7.33 aps, 2.67 dps) and Miranda Klein (5.00 aps, 3.50 dps) split setting duties while playing more than capable defense. Jenna Gillean is another strong hitter for the Crusaders, contributing 3.17 kills per set and a .289 hitting percentage.

Key Stats for Pomona-Pitzer (2-2): The Sagehens started 2018 at home and split their four matches. Adrienne Tong and Sara Ryerson evenly split the setting, with Tong averaging 6.00 assists per set and Ryerson producing 5.11 per set. Their most frequent target thus far is Julia Zwaal, who is averaging 3.33 kills and 4.00 digs per set. Not far behind are Isabel Kelly (2.80 kps, 2.77 dps) and Gaby Harrison (2.62 kps). Sophie Janssen also is a big part of the team's defense with 3.69 dis per set.

Key Stats for Whittier (1-3): It may appear as if the Poets are off to a rough start, but Whittier did not dodge anyone in the opening weekend, dropping matches to both Emory and Illinois Wesleyan, schools that were each ranked in the top 15 in the country. The Poets played everyone tough as well, averaging 18.47 digs per set. However, Whittier had some trouble putting the ball down, too, as evidenced by a .119 hitting percentage and 20.00 digs per set by opponents. Mackenzie Thieme leads the team with 3.47 kills per set, while Ashley Whittall averaged 2.50 kills, 3.29 digs and 0.43 aces per set.
