2018 Clarkson Men's Soccer Preview

For the last few years, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team has slowly built up a talented corps of student-athletes, and this year many of those players are juniors and seniors, positioning the Golden Knights for what could be an excellent 2018 season.

The Golden Knights open up the campaign with a streak of six straight home games at Hantz Turf Field, including North Country Classic opponents Alfred University and Heidelberg University this weekend.

Top Returners: Though the Golden Knights will miss the scoring prowess and presence of Kevin Calnan, the team's top scorer for the last two seasons, Clarkson has essentially nine starters returning in 2018. This includes one of the top freshman in the conference last season, Mack Walton. The sophomore midfielder made an immediate impact in all facets of the game for Clarkson, including seven points on a pair of goals and three assists. Walton is the top returning scorer, but junior Stephen Klimek (3-0-6), senior Drew Lewis (2-0-4), Brandon Bahr (1-2-4), John Furcick (1-2-4) and Aidan Subra (0-3-3) also contributed. Senior James Homan also knocked in two goals late in the season and the two-time Liberty League All-Star will headline an experienced defense, which will also include a healthy Josh Eidem, junior Chris Jupin and sophomores Bahr and Greg Schebece, with the latter duo combining for 20 starts. Senior Riley McDonald played well down the stretch of 2017 with only six goals allowed in the final seven games of the year (0.83 goals against average) and .786 save percentage. Junior Ian Roeloffs saw time in 11 games in goal last year as well, posting a 1.41 goals against average and .742 save percentage.

Top Newcomers: The Golden Knights were a veteran-laden team, but the Green and Gold welcomed eight newcomers to the fold for 2018. Nate Liscum and Ben Root will likely vie for plenty of pitch time in the early going, with Liscum adding to the defense and Root looking to add some scoring punch. Sam Pych, Bobby Guilfoil, Evan Yeigh, and Noah Kormanyos hope to gain some early experience as field players and Bryan Benitez adds to Clarkson's goalkeeping depth.
