Sixth Inning Sinks Knights Twice at Skidmore

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Saratoga Springs, NY – In two straight games Skidmore College scored what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth innings as the Clarkson University Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Thoroughbreds, 1-0 and 5-3, in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 7-24-1 overall and 2-10 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore edged upward to 17-19 and 4-8. Clarkson is scheduled to play two games against St. Lawrence on Sunday afternoon at Scott Field.

In the opener, runs were at a premium as only Skidmore was able to push one across in the bottom of the sixth. However, both teams had plenty of chances. The Thoroughbreds had runners on second and third in each of the first two innings and had a runner on third in the third frame, but couldn't cash in on any of those chances. Clarkson also had a runner on second with just one out in the second inning but was unable to score, and the Knights had two in scoring position in the third when Hannah Bowen singled and Summer Lancette doubled, but a fly out ended the threat.

Skidmore scored its only run of the contest in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Emily Popp singled through the left side and was sent to third on a double by Hannah Paolucci two hitters later. Jill Strileckis then lifted a fly ball to center field that was just deep enough to allow Popp to score. Clarkson challenged in the seventh when Kyrstin Messier singled to open the inning, but a strikeout and a double play ended Clarkson's chances of sending the game to extra innings.

Summer Lancette and Michele Winn each were 2-for-3 in the first game. Sam Mennig was the tough luck loser, allowing only four hits while striking out five in six innings. Amanda Carilli gained the win for Skidmore, limiting the Clarkson offense to seven hits and no walks in seven innings of work.

Game two saw much more offense, but the Thoroughbreds again scored the winning runs late in the contest. Lizette Roman-Johnston got Skidmore on the scoreboard with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, but Clarkson responded with three in the top of the third. Danielle Whitham and Hannah Bowen opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Summer Lancette drove both in with a triple to right field. Lancette then scored herself on a single up the middle from Bridget Woolley.

Skidmore wouldn't allow the Knights to hold the lead for long, scoring one in the bottom of the third on a Kristina Foley single which scored Adrianna Garcia. The two teams would go scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but Karly Fishkin drilled a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Skidmore a 5-3 edge. The Knights went down in order in the seventh as the Thoroughbreds swept the twin bill.

Hannah Bowen was 2-for-4 in game two and Lancette reached twice on a triple and walk, scoring once and driving in two runs. Leah Allen took the loss, striking out five in six innings, but giving up 12 hits and a pair of walks. For Skidmore, Amanda Carilli once again tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and a walk in seven frames.
